Do not ever put usb you found into your pc. Seriously you will regret it.

use it in a device that you don’t care about because there is a 90% chance that it’s filled with stuff you don’t want to happen to your main computer. if it’s clean then use it or sell it I guess

Wipe it on a non-critical VM first.
It’s extremely rare, but possible, for these devices to contain malware. I’ve seen it once in my entire life, where a 64 MB USB drive tried to autorun a malware installer. Clicking “No” was enough.

So say I had a nikon DSLR d5300… Would it be wise to plug it in to format it in the camer? Id assume the potential virus payload would be pc(win/mac) specific.

Damn some people here… He found a SD Card still in its original packing on the side of the road.
Nobody went all the way to put malware on this thing, repackage it into the box, drop it somewhere random and hope you infect some useful system and not random PC running fortnite with not even a credit card saved in the browser.
Also, even if some crazy did do all that, why the heck would they use such a high capacity for a scam like that?
Scams and malware have a far simpler way to infect people then this roundabout systems. The card is almost certainly clean if the packaging is actually unopened.

Don’t plug it into a computer you care about. Optimally, something not network connected at all. Consider live booting to a Linux environment and inspecting it there instead.
The likelihood of it being nefarious whatsoever is slim to nothing at best.
That being said, if only 1 in 10 USBs found by the side of the road are malicious, you can bet I’m still going to be safe about it and do my due diligence regardless.
Do I have government secrets? No. I still value my privacy and yes, I know Google/Facebook and every other app out there do not.
I don’t like someone specifically having access to data that they can now distribute with criminal intent or purpose.
That and well, credit card information/bank details, address stuff etc that can be used for identity fraud after being sold for pennies assuming it’s not just a device built to fry something for shits and giggles.
I take reasonable steps to ensure that I’m being safe about things, like putting USBs in almost fried old laptops that don’t have access to wifi networks.
If you want to risk being the 1-in-10, that’s your choice. Likewise, if you want to be safe, it’s also your choice. Do what sounds reasonable to you 🙏

You know I always get excited finding a random usb because there’s a small chance to find someone’s dirty laundry, but this one still packaged so I doubt it has any
