As much as I like RE5, it’s also one of the most egregiously offensive examples of a game that uses the infamous sepia filter. Here’s with it on vs. it turned off with the TrueColours Mod

I’m not against filters, they convey sensations and can be used as a good narrative resource, but the classic Mexico/Africa filter simply doesn’t look good.
With the mod it looks much better.

How else are they supposed to show your not in the states if they don’t use a piss filter?!?

I adore the filters in video games . Its not real life, its artistic intention for specific feel and mood. I fucking loved it in re5 and deus ex HR and many other games . Im not seeking true to life recreation of real world when its a game about shooting zombies and punching boulders

I can see an argument that it makes the whole place feel sickly and decaying in spite of the bright sunlight, which does work with the infected city on the brink. But then we to go bunga bunga land shoot men in grass skirts so they may have gotten things right by mistake.

I prefer the unfiltered version but I get what they were going for. RE5 seems like a game that would really benefit from the remake format though. I know RE6 doesn’t have the best reputation but gameplay wise it works fine. RE5 still feels really dated after RE4 remake

Never forget that the PS3 Uncharted games had a “Next-Gen Filter” you could turn on under the Extras menu and it was just the piss filter.

People don’t understand the importance of filters like this. The game on the right could theoretically be anything. Colour filters when used effectively are distinct and allow almost immediate colour association.
For example: Battlefield 3’s blue filter. Side by side on YouTube with Battlefield 2042 severely enhances the experience. There’s a generic aesthetic to things just being true tone, that can literally take away from the cinematic tone. Example [BF3 colour grading vs 2042.](https://youtu.be/E5fr1R8kZzI?feature=shared)
Fallout 3. Gears of war.
It’s basically just colour grading similar to in films, but can go slightly too far like we saw in Fallout NV.
Games without colour filters lose a certain something. True tone isn’t always for the best, even when it can look more pleasing on the eye side by side with the colour graded version.
I say this as a designer with experience in colour grading.

I used to do this with modded fo3 until I realized that the fo3 filter as ugly as it is adds to the game with the nukes/fallout and radiation.
For re5 though I will admit them colours look good, I’ll need to try this at some point.

The worst is still the split screen… I don’t even know how someone can try it and say : yes we go with that 😂

Uncharted 2 seemed like exceptions in 2009 when it comes to atmosphere and color. It even has a filter that parodies every “realism” games.
Mogutaros
There were several games at the time that used it but were actually a detriment to the game image quality. RE5 it’s not one of those, I think. It fits the feel of the game pretty well.

The modified version looks kinda unnatural – too cold.
However the default version looks like immense air pollution. It’s not really sepia it has too much green, which makes it look like dirty air pollution but not more warm colors as sepia does.

It’s emulating Black Hawk Down, it’s not simply just a piss filter. I think it looks great, adds a gritty feeling.

in this case it was just a lazy cheat to try to outline a world of dust and decay , the one on the right while it looks better makes the world look more clean and frees . Instead of making asseets look weither and putting in particle effects just throw a sepia filter on things. ITs dont a lot in wester films / games to give it that dusty gritty sky / poor air quality look .
I much prefer the cleaner look even if it reduced immersion a bit
doglywolf
I am so brainwashed by the decades of this lazy trick i would play those 2 scene totally different .
The left side i would slowly creep around knowing some horror is lurking nearby and carefully loot what i assume would be extreme limited supplies from old cabinets or slim pickings
The right side i would run around exploring and climbing ready to take on anything looking for loot or hidden cashes
