From further research it would seem that this has happened before, both at a national airport and a local university. Although many of the usb have been handed to police some have risked it and found cryptic Chinese propaganda.

I have yet to open the usb (my dad wanted to show his friends so still has it)
–
I will open tonight and explore the contents.
A lot of people have asked for copies of the files within, I’m unsure if this is wise but will work towards uploading it somewhere for download if people are still interested.

I decrypted the contents of the flash drive utilizing machine learning to brute force their encryption, I managed to decode a message that was being transmitted to a known IP address belonging to overseas clandestine operations of the CCP.
My name is Andrew Bernard I have risked a great deal to share this information, here is the decoded message 一定要喝阿華田

Be very careful as others have said, potentially it could cause hardware damage to whatever you plug in too. Depending on exactly what is inside the stick.
Admittedly my nose would be twitching too, I’d dig out an old computer to plug in after popping the plastic to see if it looks like a normal stick inside.

The way viruses work these days you will never know you have one. You poor pc will just be used in a botnet for illegal activities without you knowing.
First, check this is not a USB killer. Google “USB killer” and remove the outer casing. If it looks like a regular USB with a flat flash memory chip (not with loads of capacitors), proceed with caution. You can use a live Linux ISO and boot from it. Just download Ubuntu/Mint/Manjaro and flash it to a good known thumb drive (not to the sketchy one). Probably nothing biggy, but better be safe.
