About to try Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands and I put in my username. I haven’t had an issue any other time I’ve used it on other games and I can’t tell what the abusive part is…
Well known fact everyone named Caldswell is a bully.
InternationalTrip302
when I google it the first thing that pops up is a shooting supply company. Thats all I can think of.
its_crayg_not_creg
It’s Scottish slang for “blue balls”
SacralResonance
…maybe they’re just really anti-Mormon?
BoostbeBetter-18U
It could be too close to Caldwell, which is a city in Idaho and Idaho is just kinda offensive in general!
boner_sauce
Here we can’t even say it. We just say the C word.
Bruarios
4 consonants in a row may get it flagged as spam

Is it something really silly, like they don’t like ‘swell’?
IX-Grunt
I couldn’t use my legal name in Madden (Gray).
Tim_Kapa
could be if you capitalize some letters it looks like “aids” – c AlDS well – my guess anyway
Topgunshotgun45
Lowercase L looks like an I which means you could be trying to say AIDS.
darthbiscuit
I’d be offended if someone named me “Caldswell” too.

Gearboxes and Microsoft’s profanity filter is completely fucked.
apparently “Nier” as a user name is blasphemous.
But “teengloryhole69”? Completely acceptable.

This reminds me of the time my friend tried to enter his username for Smite. His username is LuckyStrike.
They wouldn’t allow it because it was offensive.. We found out it’s because of this: lucKYStrike
pcpforlife
Some games are just weird and vague. Havent been able to use my last name in a fifa game in like 8 years, also says its offensive. But yet its a common European last name that the commentors say all the time.
No-Vice_Novice
Rhymes with Ballsmell.
kdeanna
Most Nintendo games won’t let me call myself Kiki, despite there being characters named Kiki in the game ¯_(ツ)_/¯ my only guess is it being rude Tagalog slang according to former coworkers.
KidPygmy
A lot of profanity filters include phrases in other languages. It’s possible that ‘alds’ or something is a slur somewhere? Kinda hard to say
AkaShindou
Profanity filters are the equivalent to no-tolerance policies in school. Too many abusers, so they decide to ruin everyone’s experience rather than punish the offenders.
Appropriate_Shock556
It’s tiny Tina obviously you didn’t pay for the name dlc
GrandMasterBullshark
I used to play swtor and they censored the word Saturday in chat
boinker1363
PlayStation says my last name violates there rules if I try to make a new psn account. Have to intentionally misspell it or it won’t work.

Favorite example of this was a game that had a Bastard Sword as an object and the game censored *itself* when the sword was mentioned. (Sorry I can’t recall the game – it was an MMO where there was always a lot of fighting in chat between the Turkish players and others).
NotTonyStark39
As someone with a VERY similar last name, I’m shocked at this.

Stop trying to spread diseases, dude.
WanderingSchola
Possibly ‘swell’.
stripseek_teedawt
“Dswell”? Lol
ZugTheMegasaurus
My partner goes by the name “Spicy” on a lot of games. There have been multiple games that will censor it like “S***y” or “Spi*y” because the filter interprets a common dictionary word as a racial slur with a y on the end.

It’s Dutch for Belgium.

But, just to be clear, everyone:
Companies are doing this filtering (sometimes completely ridiculously), because the US Congress threatened these companies that if they don’t take action themselves to make gaming ‘safer’, then congress will step in and enact legislation that will be much more strict — and no-one wants that. And Congress did that, because “concerned mothers” were bombarding them with demands that they do something about the ‘Satanic Atheistic Abominations D&D whatever’ games that are poisoning children’s minds.
So while it is popular to blame ‘liberal snowflakes’ for all this sanitization, the initial impulse for this madness came from mostly conservative side of the spectrum which feared a new technology and what it was seemingly doing.
