Some games are just weird and vague. Havent been able to use my last name in a fifa game in like 8 years, also says its offensive. But yet its a common European last name that the commentors say all the time.

A lot of profanity filters include phrases in other languages. It’s possible that ‘alds’ or something is a slur somewhere? Kinda hard to say
Profanity filters are the equivalent to no-tolerance policies in school. Too many abusers, so they decide to ruin everyone’s experience rather than punish the offenders.

PlayStation says my last name violates there rules if I try to make a new psn account. Have to intentionally misspell it or it won’t work.

Favorite example of this was a game that had a Bastard Sword as an object and the game censored *itself* when the sword was mentioned. (Sorry I can’t recall the game – it was an MMO where there was always a lot of fighting in chat between the Turkish players and others).
As someone with a VERY similar last name, I’m shocked at this.

My partner goes by the name “Spicy” on a lot of games. There have been multiple games that will censor it like “S***y” or “Spi*y” because the filter interprets a common dictionary word as a racial slur with a y on the end.

Companies are doing this filtering (sometimes completely ridiculously), because the US Congress threatened these companies that if they don’t take action themselves to make gaming ‘safer’, then congress will step in and enact legislation that will be much more strict — and no-one wants that. And Congress did that, because “concerned mothers” were bombarding them with demands that they do something about the ‘Satanic Atheistic Abominations D&D whatever’ games that are poisoning children’s minds.
So while it is popular to blame ‘liberal snowflakes’ for all this sanitization, the initial impulse for this madness came from mostly conservative side of the spectrum which feared a new technology and what it was seemingly doing.
