Worth swapping a golden 10900k(s) for a newer cpu?

BTW Only reason I say golden because it is a SP103 which I belive was high for a 10th gen. All running on an 360 AIO nothing special.

You attach too much value to the quality of silicon.

Realistically you’re looking at a sub-10% delta with the average cpu of the same type. Atleast I’ve not had a chip that I could OC >10% compared to online reviews since the fx 8320. The 14900k or 7800X3D are way beyond that already.

I’m not saying you should upgrade, a 10900k would still more than enough for anything I do. Just that the golden 10900k does not really change that decision.

It depends on what you do with it. For Productivity, 100% a swap would bring a huge boost, for gaming not so much.

It is basically a midrange CPU nowadays, which means it will not limit any current GPU, in most titles. In 4K even a 4090 will not be limited by this CPU.

Stock 10900k is similar to a 5800X as Zen3 Cores have slightly higher IPC than Skylake. That means even a nice overclock won’t come close to a 5800X3d or 7700X, yet alone a 7800x3d.

Used prices for this CPU are pretty good. You can probably get at least 300$ for the CPU and another 100-200 for your board and RAM depending on the brand and tier.

For that amount of money a sidegrade to AM5 is definitely possible. Only swapping DDR4 for DDR5 will cost you something, but remember the AM5 Platform is a much better baseline for future upgrades.

For productivity workloads a sidegrade to 5950x or 12700KF would yield in massively better multithreaded performance, albeit gaming performance would stay very similar. With those CPUs could keep your ram though.

Thanks, some good feedback. With my current Mobo I have a asus maximus XII Extreme the only CPU I would upgrade to would be the 11900K as it means I would have to sell Mob, cpu and ram to go for a different platform. As i said I stream and game mainly. When I stream thats when fps takes a hit usually dropping 15fps or so.

    I’ll get a y-cruncher bench for you.

  5. A trash bin 14900k will beat it in everything.
