I was give this for free today. My computer knowledge is more general – I know I need a hard drive… any advice?

The case itself is the legendary Cooler Master Cosmos. Nice!

But based on the age of the case it’s likely a very old system, so if you want it for anything a bit more demanding you’ll likely need to replace almost everything inside. A Geforce 1080 is still capable of some gaming even today though. Do you know anything about the stuff in there except the graphics card? Does it startup into BIOS when you power it on? (You don’t need any drive for that)

    You got this for free!?

How do people get so gosh darned lucky…

Anyways, you’re going to need some storage to power it on. Preferably an ssd. I’m guessing it has no m.2 slot (it might, but who knows?), look for a sata ssd. Also get a usb drive and put a windows installer on there. You’ll figure the rest out.

holy cable mess batman. appears to have an ancient corsair liquid cooler. Probably h100. the liquid evaporates over time. My h100i lost too much liquid to be used like 5 years ago so I’d be shocked if that thing is still in good order.

Cosmos 2. Still use the case in my main machine.

If the top PCIE slot is still intact, better put the GPU in that. The lower ones use less lanes (x8 or x4 instead of x16), that can leave performance on the table.

Dude, SCORE! Make sure you get a solid state drive rather than a hard drive. If you get a hard drive your computer will be slow. SSDs are also inexpensive.

This is one of the best made PC cases ever released, it can fit even extended ATX motherboards and a crazy amount of 2.5″ ssds. I have one for my plex server housing dual xeon cpus and a server motherboard.
