Thus Chinese companies/institutions have tried to hoard 4090 and better cards in advance.

A bit of common sense and you’d arrive to the conclusion that it’s the best card on the market right now, nothing comes close and not really that expensive to people with lots of money. It’s also the best bet if you’re working with very high demanding tech. Just the other day I read an article in which it said Facebook is stockpilling huge amounts of them for AI stuff

Didn’t they stop making them?

It got banned in China, who in turn started using sanction busting measures to buy 4090s. It created an artificial bubble in the market, driving the price up.

Its crazy how much its risen in price, the cheapest 4090 starts at $2200 here.
But yeah the main reason is the export ban on China by the US

so glad i got it for 1,6k €, enjoying every second with it in 4k

Extremely high demand. Especially with Chinese.

Export ban in China, channels were completely drained of stock, AD102 chip production was redirected to a China exclusive 4090D model.
Here we are today. It’s not that the prices are up, it’s that no legitimate retailer has any cards. Soon as Microcenter gets some stock, it’ll be at typical MSRP. Might want to just go with a 4080 Super in the meantime.

Ai devs and China. I’ve been thinking about upgrading my 3090 since doing Ai dev work. Wasn’t necessary before

I bought my 4090 at $1976 back in 2022…and it’s Cheapest Gigabyte Gaming OC 4090, the ROG 4090 STRIX cost $3000

The current price is still kinda cheap in comparasion to other countries. It’s like what, 2-3 months worth of pure min wage? Over here It’d be like 15 months.

I got my Strix 4090 from Best Buy around November 2023. It was only $2000

I honestly cannot fathom spending $2,000 on a fucking video card. Like, if I needed it for my work due for computational power, I get it, but for gaming? Yeah, no.
If prices for GPUs stay like they have been for the next several years, I’m likely just going to get a console once my 3080Ti (bought used) is too slow to play modern games. I’ve been a PC gamer for 30 years, but it makes no sense at these prices.

Both of my last two cards were more expensive a year after I bought them lol

Scalping, Chinese companies trying to buy them, and people being more than willing to pay the price for the performance.
A lot of people will see the price from other sellers, and list their used cards for the same price. Odds are they probably won’t sell for that price, but people just see a list price and assume that’s the real value that people are paying.
Some have actually been going down a bit, but they seem to go out of stock once they hit $1800-1900, since the $300 mark up doesn’t matter when they can likely resell it for a $200-300 profit.
