Is not that there are too many games, is that there is too much garbage. Shovelware and trend hunters. Just a few examples. Soulslike, Roguelike, Metroidvania, and Survival. We have a truckload of these. There is a limit to how many games people can play.
With "AAA" games, too many are broken, so safe that it's boring, or have so much monetization crap that almost NOBODY cares to play.
The number of games not much of a problem as the price of the games. Cuz the price of the games can be a turn off for a lot of people – especially when they moved it from $59.99 to $69.99 a few years ago, and are expecting to move it up to $100 by 2027
There are not too many games. There are too many people who think that they have to buy everything that gets released. There are a sht ton of big and small games that come out that I just put in my ignore list.
Hogwarts Legacy might be the only AAA game i bought recently. I was more interested in games like Robocop. The only AAA game im looking forward to is Dragon's Dogma 2. Meanwhile my wishlist is filled with games like Sin Reloaded, Phantom Fury, etc Its about knowing what you want. And filtering out what you dont.
palworld just sold a katillion copies. I do not believe thr problem is too many games as much as too many predatory live services. More palworlds less obvious battle pass live service gimmicks
y but what can u do?the only solution is to make those games Exclusive to PC or not release them at all on PC but then again Publisher's ravenue will plummet look at HZD on PC 5,5m copeis sold and then u want them to ditch the PC releases?and its the publishers decision not to put X game on a service like GamePass and am not mentioning PS+ cause then u are locking a game behind a single console and thats bad business for those low key games
I think there could be some more consolidation of talented devs….they're just so so many cases of devs leaving a company and founding their own/joining a new studio which is fine for them, but the issue is that they're often put in these situations because of crappy publishers, who will proceed to 1. attract new, young devs because they're an established company and 2. churn out the next heartless sequel
All of that said, the numbers don't mean that much. We all have preferences and nobody's buying and playing all those 60 games every day…if you only take the games you're interested in, and also take the ones built up to a decent quality, cut out the rest, probably be a few games a week, which itself is gonna be challenging to do for anyone who's working to fund that, and not gaming all day every day. And if you are doing that, please be mindful of your health as well.
In the past due to limited access to broadband internet, gaming consoles, game shops, income, etc I would be forced to only buy one game and play it for months to get my money's worth. But now with high speed internet and digital downloads, and cheap access to AAA and indie games via game pass, playstation plus, humble bundle, steam sales, epic free claims. literally can play a different game everyday or every hour if you wanted to! There can never be too many games, just not enough time!
Talk about first world problems…. We don't need fewer games, but better filters. The reality is, most games don't thrive because they fail to satisfy an audience. If we didn't see any sort of success stories in the indie world, I'd say discoverability is a problem, but given the fact we have small studios delivering bangers like Sea of Stars or even viral success stories like Vampire Hunters, I'd say it has more to do with widespread mediocrity than a quantity issue. This doesn't exclude big studios, and the fact they're such big projects only makes them riskier, if anything. Forspoken and Gollum failed because they're bad games, not because there were too many games.
There is just not enough time to play all of the games. Even if I do want to play my entire backlog it would take me two years to play it all without rest. Now I am at the point of just not caring if I complete a game or play it or not. I have plenty of other games to play.
I disagree, that's like giving the the pass to screw everyone up. The 70 that went or the 100 price they want to sell games are nothing but greed. Many devs came forward with this and that they DO NOT see ANY of these money while the CEOs and their connections pocket the raise of the prices. This is like trying to excuse thieves that get into our homes and steal from us despite them having more than us. You're trying to excuse the inexcusable snd that's a huge issue, you're pretty much enabling them to continue that at the expense of others. So it's not about too many games, you can filter them out, uou don't have to buy everything the same day they come out
The issue isn't that there's too much, but that there's a lot that isn't good. Back in the Atari days, there were a lot of publishers rushing to get shovelware in order to make money, but ultimately that crashed the market. I doubt that will happen again, but the issue is that even in TGA, where supposedly the best of the best is showcased, the same games get shown, and when Forza 8 of all things gets racing game of the year, you start to wonder what is going on. I prefer less games but more polish, and if publishers don't ask for more than the bare minimum, we're going to get stuck with worse products over time.
I mean there are also a lot of tv shows, movies, books, comics, etc. Money and Time are limited resources, especially Time. People just won't be able to play all games.
Well considering that video game entertainment has sales exceeding movies and music sales combined, it's not surprising there are so many games. Just wish they would spend the development time to polish AAA games
Too many games??? If a game is good, it soars. If a game is crap or banal, it flops. These days, Games Publishers can be a put-off for new games. (Like DRM crazy, Capcom and Ubisoft.)
With all due respect to the devs, Robocop was a clear pass at €50. The gameplay is a bit slow, and the franchise isn't exactly fresh in people's minds. Sure there are a lot of games releasing, and I didn't get to buy everything on my wishlist, but at that price Robocop doesn't even make it on the whishlist
doesnt matter the amount of games, cause the best ones / ones with good marketing will rise to the top, and that doesnt restrict access to all the other games at all.
My parents used to say, "remember the video game crash in 1983. That's the year when too many games were released to the point they got bankrupt." I hope it doesn't happen for the second time. But when games become 100 dollars, that's the time to move on to do other things, like go to the movies and to a music festival.
IMO companies think that great graphics justify the price point. Then we end up with games that look pretty, but the gameplay is boring and the writing is gutter trash. 90% of these new game titles that came out are not worth $70 usd. Also companies like Naughty Dog complain about backlash and/or poor sales, yet they fail to realize that pushing the leftist narratives doesn't make money. The vast majority of gamers just want good stories, good characters and good gameplay, were not the "modern audiences" that companies keep trying to placate. Poor and ugly character designs, microtransactions, poor writing and prices way too high are the problem with modern gaming.
I've been seeing a trend that parallels this in the past year or two. All the publishers and devs want to create the next overwatch, destiny, bf, lol, dota, xiv, wow, eso, gw2 ect. Games that players will sink huge amounts of time and money into over months or years. problem is most players will only play one, maybe two of those type of games for that amount of time and never give the others a chance. fast forward to recent trends. there's not enough long-term players that do that for all the different games and styles out. then the publishers and devs blame the game failing to gain an audience on the gamer rather then them trying to release in an already flooded market for that style.
I’ve come to have a new philosophy that I’m really only gonna try to play like 8/10 or better games and not waste time because there are so many games out there
Honestly immortals of aveum and for spoken (along with saints row) pretty much died thanks to the absurd level of wokeness/pandering/ESG and would have flopped regardless of release window and date or even investment, gaming industry is going through the same hellhole as the comics and movies industry, so not only way too many games are releasing but way too often they are being inferior to stuff released 10-20 years ago, and to add insult to injury now we have remakes being announced that 8/80 with some being amazing like RE2, or big misses like RE3 and Dead Space
Not all of them can make games or good games usually only the once that can design "Game Engines" machine language (assembler level) and expertise of graphics hardware that are successful the others is basically just wanna be, for example people who design Street Fighter 6 could easily develop Card/Board games very easily but people who makes card, board, adventure games are not really development capable or can better Street Fighter 6, it's the expertise of semi conductors, hardware and software development is the key, other people is just using other peoples game engine, development kits and such without the expertise (Electronics) most of the bad games usually falls in these category and there are thousands of them by just looking at it, business people who wants to make easy money, accountants maybe 😂😂Just a Joke 👌👍😉😎✌
Oversaturation of market by product and maximum reach in consumers. The amount of money AAA companies waste on mediocre games is not sustainable. Future belongs to small devs, indie games and games that are made with a lot of AI tools.
I think gaming companies need to change their viewpoints on games. Long term gain on games rather than up front day one. Example games like demon souls didn't sell great at first. Word of mouth and cheaper prices blew it up. This is case for a lot of games. Unless they are pushed by youtubers/streamers or have good marketing it's pointless. Good games will always rise to the top. We do have more choice than ever. This is the best time of gaming. We could play so many games that are amazing for free. I finally broke down and play fortnite with friends no build. I had a good time. I am getting back to finishing monster hunter. I can play new palworld game. I beat guardians of the galaxy and jedi survivor. My gaming tastes can change the fly. I am playing heavily into devil may cry peaks of combat. I love that game so much. It allows me to play co-op and raid battles for devil may cry game. All these games are fighting for my attention and the point is I can choose what I play. It will affect everyone, but with all those choices. Prices will be affected long term. People can't justify spending 70 or 60 50 40 30 20 10 for certain games. People look for deals and what they know. What they think they will like. Monster hunter world world was 5 dollars this winter sale. Perfect price just to get someone into the series. Iceborn was 20 with the main game. These are amazing prices with amount of content. Meaning no money or time spent on other games. Choice is good, but it's up to the player to decide what they want to do set goals or choices. How they have fun or what is enjoyable. I feel like players all struggle with what they want to spend time with. That is why games are not enjoyable. They don't try new things either. They stick to what they know and aren't willing to expand their gaming horizon.
I would not be surprised if somehow – there will be a breakthrough game or system or option of performance that would just set a new standard so as to just kick butt and really almost take away from gaming like this or put steam in the dark – Kinda like how Pollock came along after Picasso – everyone thought Picasso was it -that it was done – as far as art might go almost – but then comes Pollock and shatters the entire concept of everything art in general – rules will and are changing – subscription type stuff will really turn people off I bet – and people will want something else – especially with AI I am expecting that something big enough will capture gamers from every current scene
Three things come to mind when I think of why game companies are struggling (I know there are more, but these were off the top my head).
1. Some of studios that were shut down were bought out by Embracer then closed. Which brings up a point. Why sell your company unless you need money? This plagued the gaming market back in 2000 when EA and Microsoft bought a bunch of companies only to close them down with a couple of years of purchase.
Others game makers made bad gambles on IP. ie released a bad game, tried to get into the mmo market with a bland game or get to a genre that has too many games in it or the genre is dying like battle royal games, or games as service.
Too many games have been problem for years specially with asset dumps on Steam. That does hurt mid to small companies that are releasing good to great games, but no one is noticing them do the trash on Steam.
Your take is such an American take. There are several problems with the video game industry. Yes there are a lot of games, but they're all the same. Either its a AAA game that falls into one of four AAA genres(action adventure with stealth / FPS/ Live service / Sports) or its an indie game which falls into one of 3 categories( 8bit pixel platfomers / rouge-like / cozy). There is no middle ground, AA game. Its either big publisher or no publisher, end of story.
When it comes to seeing how games should now cost $70 because of their cost to make it. NO THE F*CKING SHOULD NOT. Gaming is already packed with mobile microtransactions, day one DLC, pay more for early access, season passes, here are slot machines in your for all ages games. On top of that because these publishers are lazy AF and only do regional pricing in terms of comparing everything to the US dollar a standard video games costs $100 in Canada, $120 in Australia, something like $90 in the UK and like $1,000 in Brazil. To keep raising the cost of games is only leading to more people either finding a new hobby or in this Canadian's case, pirate.
There needs to be that mid-tier game like there was back in the Xbox PS2 days. Every game can not be releasing at $70 USD or $105 CDN (after taxes). People can't be expected to keep up with multiple live service games or buy the DLC + season pass for several open world, action adventure games in one month. No one is asking game publishers to spend hundreds of millions on advertising. Especially when we live in a world where youtube and social media is a thing. How often are people bored by Summer Game Fest showing cinematic trailer after cinematic trailer as opposed to just showing us bloody game play? Showing game play as opposed to movie trailers for things that arent in the game can reduce the game's budget drastically.
TL;DR
Game prices do not need to go up.
The gaming industry simply refuses to evolve in any way that isnt reducing ownership of games and increasing nickle and diming customers.
Raising game prices simply because the States barely gets game price increases only server to hurt the rest of the world which gets yearly price increases to the point of unaffordability. (No one is getting a 2nd job to buy a PS3).
There are not too many games being released. The same games are constantly being released with a different skin. They are copying each other's homework right down to the pricing.

I already got about 6'400 games on Steam, is this to much?
It’s not a problem I just want better games… not games following similar concepts of fornite or even cough cough hentai games

very interesting video, thanks mush
Who can afford games when food and housing getting so high especially when the gaming companies start jacking up the price to 80, 90, or 100 bucks?

Steam desperately needs some quality control

Omg the redfall was the shortest support
What are you talking about the only game in existence right now is Palworld
I'll take a crapy indie game over. A ubisoft trash game anyday 😂
AI will easily reduce cost since it will get better at doing consistent characters in 3D so this will be solved. Plus steam just changed their policy
doesnt matter the amount of games, cause the best ones / ones with good marketing will rise to the top, and that doesnt restrict access to all the other games at all.
Wwaayy too much of the developmental budget is going into graphics, in most games, it's the most expensive part of the game.
My parents used to say, "remember the video game crash in 1983. That's the year when too many games were released to the point they got bankrupt." I hope it doesn't happen for the second time. I hope the bubble bursts and they return to making solid single player AA titles instead of these always online AAA casinos 🎰
