So, it is real, Google is fucking with our CPU because they are upset that we use ad blockers. In my opinion, this should be illegal. My CPU peaked at 50W just navigating YouTube. Imagine the amount of electricity being wasted because of their practices.

Yup. And they don’t give a shit so long as they’re getting their as revenue or getting YouTube premium. Unless creators move platforms or offer alternatives, idk what all we can do
https://www.pcgamer.com/its-not-just-you-youtube-is-slowing-down-your-pc-if-you-have-adblock-installed-by-making-your-cpu-sweat-likely-as-part-of-its-draconian-war-on-ad-blockers/
The kicker of course
> The slow-down also appears to be impacting users who are subscribed to YouTube Premium while using AdBlocker for other websites, which is a problem—seeing as a subscription is a way to avoid ads without violating ToS. Our Guides Writer Sarah James tested the extension with Premium, and noted an increase of about 15-18%. Even if you believe YouTube has a right to employ anti-AdBlock strategies, the fact it’s impacting paying customers is a concern.
I haven’t noticed anything personally, but I like 3rd party mobile clients since YouTube hasn’t been able to fuck with them even half as much as they do the basic website.
Stop giving google your money and data
I hope it doesn’t spill over onto people who never touched a adblocker, im watching my ads. They better not touch my shit/
christ your right.
its using 30% of my 8 core cpu just watching a single fucking video at 1080@60
for comparison, im running elden ring in the background, and thats using 28%.
Haven’t been getting any of this using firefox.
Inb4 they use your pc to mine bitcoin.
So THATS what that is.
I was wondering why suddenly each click on YouTube freezes tab for like 15s eating 30% of my 13700k
I also checked with Edge and ublock:

nothing
Isn’t this breaking some random law in EU?
The strain this is putting on the electrical grid during peak times should be a punishable crime.
Edit: I just ran a quick test as some people were saying the extra energy use is negligible. I watched a YT video and noted 1 to 4% CPU usage and my CPU watts were around 40. I then [triggered a load](https://cpux.net/cpu-stress-test-online) close to 50% and the watts jumped to 91 – 98 (145% increase).
This is unacceptable in my opinion.
Class action incoming.
Now imagine if they add a Miner on site for AdBlocker users
First off, stop using chromium based web browsers
Secondly, stop jumping to conclusions
Using u block origin with chrome and my cpu is only bouncing between 1-5%, 7800x3d
Are you sure this isnt just the decoding load? A controlled test would be better to claim this, maybe compare on and off cpu usage
uBlock Origin on Firefox = no issues.
I’m not seeing these issues on firefox using ublock. What adblocker are you using?
I never saw any issues but when the writings on the wall, I moved on to a frontend application, works much better and is much quicker. Plus keyboard shortcuts to faster playback for those slower long repair videos that have an hour between comments.
I noticed it, typing feels sluggish, like its using 100% of my cpu. Even scrolling feels rough. I pointed this out on twitter youtube.
Stop using Chromium and especially stop using Edge.
Just use Firefox god dammit
google needs competitor
*summons the EU*
Best thing to do is not use Chrome. Use Firefox or Brave. The less corporate and more privacy centric the browser, the better.
Stop using Chromium browsers. Just stop, and Google can decide what they value more. You are losing nothing.
