I definitely know for sure that there is no right way (except smearing with a a spatula/bank card)

So long as its an IHS, it can be phallic shaped for all anyone cares.

  2. CaptainNateHiggs

I put the paste it my mouth, gargle it, and spit it on the cpu

I like the idea of doing a “4” on that bad boi

  4. Link_0610

Wait, you are supposed to put it on the CPU? I always put it in my AIO.
    /s (just in case)

It depends on the size of the IHS. But realistically all you need to do is apply enough to ensure full coverage when the cooler is mounted.

I make sure to mess up taking the cap off of the thermal paste tube and get it all over my fingers before putting pea sized dot on the center of the CPU. Works every time.

I have trust issues. So i spread evenly with a spatula

  8. Flandardly

On rectangular LGA1700 chips, I do an X with the lines pointing to each of the 4 corners to ensure even spread. The pea method in the middle sometimes wont reach the top and bottom otherwise.

I don’t have a pc, but when i cleaned up my ps4, i put a circle of thermal paste with a dot in the middle, i think that’s a good pattern to use

Kinda like this : ⭕ but with a dot in the middle

I paid for the whole tube, I’m using the whole tube!

I spread mine with a Jalapeño Cheeto and Kraft All American singles

  13. Dr__Juicy

I apply a blob and spread it if I need more i add more, I don’t trust the cooler to spread it perfectly

The way that anybody would start a debate with, which is every single way

% a line with two tiny dots is how i’ve done it for the past 35 years, seems to work ok.

  16. screwdriverfan

Just a dot on the middle. Laws of physics take care of the rest when you screw in the heatsink.

Just a genuine question: i wonder people make a penis-shaped thermal paste. If so, how’s the temp look like.

  18. GrinhcStoleGold

I started putting an X type and since then my thermals are alot better. I think “middle dot” is the worst way.

  19. DevourerOS

Five dots, for paste, but haven’t used that in years. I use a metal foil or a super thin graphite sheet. Heck of a lot better than any paste and no mess, well the graphite will leave a bit of gray on your fingers.

  20. GingerBreadStud

I literally butter it like bread. Idgaf about a messu cleanup as long as i know its covered completely.

  21. I know people will complain; we have a computer store for generations and built thousands of pc’s, if not more; and i read a lot about the science of thermale paste and did my own tests.
A small dot in the middle, then clamp it down hard.

The goal is to not have any layer of paste between the cooler and the cpu, because the thermal conductivitiy of paste is way worse then copper. You just want to fill in the microscopic imperfections of the milling of the cpu and cooler

skull shaped so the CPU knows it shouldn’t mess with me
