Use some LM from CPU to spread on the ihs as you don’t want a river on top
needs to be spread and when it coats the chip and now making waves = good amount
if some gentle “waves” seen, too much, funny how the LM acts
also paint the cooler’s base also, the same area where the contact is supposed to happen – not completely, put together
tools to spread: q-tip or some tiny watercolor brush

edit: you had it spread on another photo 🙂 amount is quite fine, slightly too much I also used to put only on chip; But nowadays for both surfaces.
