Back in the late 90s my buddy messed up a BIOS update and the mobo was bricked.
So he brought his PC to me, we downloaded the correct BIOS for his board (a completely different manufacturer’s completely different board), then hotswapped the BIOS chip into my mobo (while running, since it would obviously not boot with the erased chip), updated the BIOS on it, and swapped back my BIOS chip.
And it worked.
Then, another time we accidentally installed the BIOS chip in the wrong direction and it died 😀
I browse my phone and try not to look.
I remember, because I updated my UEFI only a couple of nights ago.
You know what’s more nerve racking? Having a UPS at hand but not using it during BIOS update.
What pissess me off is that Microsoft now is sending bios updates to some machines (dell laptops are one…), so if you are not very careful to stop a particular update then your possibly getting a bios update. I’ve had this happen to me when I needed to leave to go somewhere very important but was delayed because fucking Microsoft and Dell decided they want to update my bios without asking for my permission.
I remember the nerve-racking process of updating your graphics card too. First, completely uninstall the graphics drivers. Then reboot windows. Then beg and plea with windows to not try to install default drivers. Then open the downloaded update and hope for no failure.
I to this day, have no bios flashback, guess I’ll just never update the bios out of paranoia.
