The stupid Catch-22 with Win11 now is a clean install will absolutely demand to go online (part to MS ACCT the heck out of you, and part for their device enrollment thing for businesses) but they didn’t design the out-of-box to handle cases where there is no network driver built-in, so it just gets stuck wanting to join a network. The user would need to have a driver on a USB and know how to shift-F10 to a prompt and install it from the command line.

I installed a Linux distribution on my computer recently (pop OS). It worked out of the box.

The only issues I’ve ever had with Linux were due to Nvidia being hostile to it, switched to AMD and everything works out of the box

Switched to Linux early this year, went all in when I bought my 7800XT, first time ever going team red for gpus, absolutely no issues with it so far.
I have a windows dual boot as of recently, but I’m never on for long because the internet is super weird no matter what I do with drivers or otherwise. I don’t exactly blame it on windows because I know that family doesn’t have the same issues.
If more companies didn’t go super super hostile to Linux (I genuinely don’t understand why some companies feel the need to go out of their way to block it) then in some cases (absolutely not all!) it would be superior to Windows, especially with user friendly distros such as pop.

To be fair, my network card (a fairly standard intel one) only works ootb on linux. I had to use a usb dongle to install windows.
My NVIDIA GPU sucks on linux though.

…I had to use ethernet to install the WiFi driver on my thinkpad recently when I was trying Windows on it.
The Ublue Kinoite installer had no trouble, nor did I need to go out of my way to install a GPU driver. I don’t know if you’ve used Linux, but this post is well off the mark lol

I’ve only ever had issues with wifi when installing on macs, which often use broadcom chipsets.

as a linux ubuntu user i have never, not once; had to install display drivers and wifi drivers. it just worked out of the box.

Just finished a new PC build for a friend, I forced him to download nobara and he did 0 driver downloads. Didn’t even need to install steam or anything he just got to gaming

On my computer Windows will not recognize Ethernet until I run updates. I have to install on my painfully slow and unreliable Wifi.
Linux works just fine with no issues.

Never in my life my Internet adaptet didnt worked after a clean install. changing mobo and everything and always recognizes ethernet/wifi lol

My time with the steam deck has taught me that I prefer games to just install and work. Having to work to make them function is annoying. Windows has more than its fair share of crap, yes, but I’d much rather stick to that than Linux

Why are people so confidently wrong about this issue on *both sides*?
– Every Linux distro I’ve ever tried worked fine straight out of the box. No ethernet shenanigans needed for WiFi drivers, no display driver nonsense either. If anything I’ve had more bad experiences with network drivers on Windows… I’ve had to use the driver CD included with WiFi cards more than once.
– No, generally any Linux distro is not “just as easy to use as Windows”. Most average users have no chance of figuring it out straight away without some serious Googling and troubleshooting to find their way around it. I say this from experience.
– Yes, you can game on Linux, very well I might add. You can expect most any game without Easy Anti-Cheat to run fine (thanks in no small part to Proton), and that exception is only because of an oversight on the part of the devs of EAT, not the OS’s fault. People are working on this, though, and some have gotten it to work.
– Most people use Windows for a reason. Some people are just used to it and don’t care to switch, and that is a perfectly valid reason to continue using Windows. Stop sprinting into threads to preach Linux! (looking at you, r/pcmasterrace and r/thinkpad).
They have their pros and cons. Use what you want. My laptop has Windows 10 LTSC 2021, ZorinOS, and macOS Monterey on it all at the same time. I have all 3 because no single OS is the best at everything, and because I thought it would be silly.
