Everywhere I’m seeing is that my DeepCool AK400 is supposed to have pre-applied thermal paste. Am I stupid or does this have none and I should get some?
I’m pretty sure it’s the small grey diamonds on the thing

The square pattern **is** the thermal compound. You can mount the cooler directly as is.

Those little squares are the thermal paste. Apply pressure and it will spread across the cpu. If you want to apply better paste then wipe it clean and apply your own in an X or a pea pattern. The pressure will do the rest.

I’ve just bought and installed this cooler, yes that’s the paste on there and my temps are excellent with rhat and nothing else added

I wonder if i could use a stencil to lay this pattern down with paste each time I do it. It seems like a good way to get even coverage.
It seems the peel took with it the thermal paste on the copper inlay.
Maybe thermal paste didn’t stick well to copper and peeled away with the plastic
maybe u can reapply just for surety
