This is unfortunately unlikely to improve quickly or at all. The issue here is mostly a space concern. Doesn’t matter how fancy your sensors are, there are physical limits on optical resolution for a given aperture and focusing depth.
Your phone from 2014 was much thicker than the screen on your laptop. The camera optics are able to use that space to focus a clearer image. So unless you accept a thicker screen, a weird camera bump on the back of your laptop, or AI up scaling webcams are gonna stay blurry.

Makes sense, the old camera was so low resolution that the blurriness was able to smoothen and mask any flaws. Now that you’re being seen in full 4K the camera is no longer hiding how ugly you really are.

I use a MacBook Pro for work which lets me wirelessly use my iPhone camera as a webcam. The picture quality is really great. Way better than the built in webcam

Honestly, I dont really care… I got a gaming laptop last year and wasn’t cheap for my country standards (4 minimum wages), and it came with a 720p webcam.
It’s a downside, yes! but after a year, I only used it once for a job interview, which I could have done it with my cellphone. At the end of the day, if you’re a heavy user, you would buy a better quality webcam anyway, so why bother?

There’s a lot of good components readily available for phones that could have been adapted for laptops like the cam and speakers. Imagine how better laptops could be.

If you buy a webcam and microphone, your quality goes up infinitely. You have little control over integrated stuff.
