MacBooks aren’t customizable like that though. If you get a MacBook with more RAM it has a larger SSD, a larger screen, a faster CPU, not just more RAM. I’ve gone through a few MacBook Pros and a few Mac Pro towers back when Apple sold Aperture for managing and editing photos, they were extremely well engineered devices and I’d recommend them for any creative professional looking for a powerful laptop that “just works.”
I also understand why so many developers use a MacBook Pro, Unix backend, Python is just built in, super easy to just jump in and start writing code. I haven’t owned a Mac in nearly a decade, but the ones I’ve owned were well worth the price for what they offered.
Until non Apple laptops get the same power efficiency as the m line (maybe when the new arm processors launch…?) the value proposition of upgrades is irrelevant.
And unfortunately, when the said new arm processors arrive, I’m expecting the same level of scumbaggery at least on the ram upgrades.

Yeah, they’re ridiculously priced, but they do tend to last. My wife likes them and I can’t stand using them, but credit where credit is due. Her 10 year old Macbook Air still lasts for hours on battery whereas the battery on my 10 year old Lenovo Ideapad drains in minutes.
That said, the amount they charge for more RAM and storage is absolutely absurd.
Apple’s upgrade prices are bothering me as well, but you just can’t compare DDR4 SODIMMs to very high bandwidth, soldered LPDDR5 that’s sitting right on the SOC.
With SODIMMs, it’s cheaper to ask from Lenovo to give you the bare minimum and swap the sticks yourself.. you can even get them second hand and it wouldn’t matter. It’s just 3200mhz ram.
I just bought base model air with m2 and it is pretty good. Programming, recording, streaming etc. No problems at all – the worst thing that some app like messenger are trash

I’ve always wondered the Apple hate. You literally don’t **have** to use Apple products, unless you are building a game for iOS, at which point your company has bought the Macbook.
Just changing break pads on $100k AMG Mercedes costs you $2k. Basic inspection for Ferrari or probably somewhere around that price too. Guess what? You don’t have to buy the fucking Ferrari, you can build your own, faster and cheaper, probably won’t look that pretty. It’s up to you.
I have an iPhone which costs like +50% compared to Android. I haved got used to it and I really like how the UI works with Apple, so I will pay the premium. YOU STILL DON’T HAVE TO.
With Apple you purchase the whole ecosystem, not just the device.
I don’t like apple, so I won’t defend them… BUT… The memory for the M-chips is on-substrate. As in this case we are dealing with very limited package space, going from 8GB of LPDDR5 to 16 requires the use of 2 8GB chips rather than 2 4GB ones. An 8GB ddr5 chip is somewhere around twice the cost of a 4gb one. Though bear in mind these costs are low, even for consumers, let alone companies bulk buying. $200 more is ridiculously extortionate given the chips cost no more than $20.
I suspect the case is more to offset the cost of the CPU die in the first place. The M3 is BIG, and looks to be something like $100/die, so I would warrant the high prices for memory are to cover the costs of the CPU (while keeping profit margins high), with the assumption many people will buy the 16GB version.
I’m pretty sure no one on this subreddit even cares at this point. People who buy MacBooks aren’t the type of people to buy a PC just like we aren’t the type to buy a MacBook. Just let them be lol, you never hear MacBook users taking every single opportunity to justify their purchase against a windows PC do you?
