On low-end or sometimes mid-end builds Radeons better, less money and same performance. Go NVIDIA if you looking for a high end GPU.

I had a GTX 1660 super and upgraded to that exact GPU (ZOTAC RTX 3060 12gb OC) and the jump in performance is amazing. The 1060 is slightly weaker than the 1660 super so you will see an even bigger jump in performance.
I got it for a good price so for me it was worth it. If you can get one at a good price too I would definitely recommend it.
You can find a 6700XT for 300 new or ~250 used.

The real question is what wattage is your PSU.
If you’re sticking with Nvidia, go for it. I’m happy with mine, although I render more than I game (The DLSS breathed new life into my ancient rig). Paid $280 for mine.
I recently went from a RX6600 to a 3060Ti and I must say the stability of my system is way better now. I’m not a fanboy or anything, have used both brands over the years, it’s just that I simply noticed a very positive improvement.
$300 can get you better.

I’ve had this card for about a year now. I’m happy with it. I played CP2077 the most and I play at 4K and it handles it really well with minimal RT on. I just got Skyrim today and I’m eager to see how it looks/performs.

As someone who had both a 1060 and a 3060 ti, do yourself a favour and look for a used 6700xt
I went from 1080 to 3060 12gb oc and the leap was pretty significant. Everything on high or ultra at 1440.
As someone who upgraded from a 1070 to a 3060 12gb, 1000% yes. The extra vram makes both gaming at higher resolutions and rendering tasks much faster than on 10 series cards. Cards like the 4060 have less vram than this thing, and vram is important for both the tasks mentioned above

Is the rest of your hardware on 1060 Era parts? Good luck getting any value out of a 3060 or AMD equivalent with an ancient CPU, MB, PSU and ram.
Yes. If you want to stretch the budget a little 6700xt is great for the price too. If you can find 3060 for much lower than go for it but if it’s close to 6700xt might as well go for the more powerful card.
I would go for the TI version
Nvidia will be coming out with a super 4000 series in the spring, if you can, I’d suggest waiting.

I also literally at 1080p cannot max-out RE3 Remake, RE2 Remake, RE7 Gold, and Watch Dogs: Legion – I’d need at least 10gb+ VRAM on those. It makes my RTX 3060 laptop with 6gb VRAM and my desktop PC’s RTX 3070 with 8gb VRAM feel like something’s missing: VRAM-count. I know, 3070 often performs better than 3060 – but I really wish I had 3060’s 12gb VRAM.
Modern & upcoming games want 6-8gb VRAM minimum now and are only getting worse, as newer bare minimums are being adopted on consoles (PS5/XSX hardware), so we’ll get more of those versions and likely not many PS4/X1 versions of games for new games – just look at Avatar TON, Alan Wake 2, Immortal of Aveum, and Silent Hill 2 Remake. It’s obvious.
And you’re going to need those Tensor cores and DLSS-support from that 3000 series card, given where games are and where they’re going.
That 6gb GTX VRAM 1060’s only got FSR (thanks, AMD) and is lacking RT-support and DLSS support. Having only FSR w/ the GTX 1060 won’t always cut it, TBH. DLSS is much better and when it’s actually available, it’s the better option over FSR.
