Im still debating after years with people about this particular subject.
Even the wiki contradicts itself:

And in another paragraph from Bryce Mosley article:

So, whats the real deal here ? could be both ? Alt purges them from the Net and triggers the malware on them or the purge itself kills them on act before the Netwatch could do anything ?

Alt kills them, it’s impossible to misunderstand.
I think NetWatch’s attack is using VDBs as jump board to reach Alt, and Alt offed VDBs to cover her tracks.
VDBs are technically attacked by NetWatch but the intent is not to zero them(they could very well zero them afterwards anyway if Alt didn’t do that we will never know) but to track Alt.
Alt ends up burning everyone but V.
Alt whipped them all out. Netwatch didn’t get the chance even if they wanted too.

Ahem let me explain gentlemen and ladies . The netwatch put a tracker on V to track the vdbs and kill them . But Alt sensed the tracker when u entered the blackwall and killed the vdbs before netwatch could track and kill them because she wanted to remain hidden from netwatch. This is the reason why I always kill both parties 🙂
Its pretty clear actually. Netwatch has no reason to kill VDBs, they just want to close up Rezo Agwe, that just makes VDBs a subsequent threat to them, thats is.

VDBs reach Alt through Rezo Agwe, when you dive in, Netwatch gets access to Rezo Agwe and starts deleting it(i guess i dont know how that shit works), Alt notices the Netwatch’s interference, afraid of getting tagged and harmed by Netwatch, she(it?) Bartmosses the subnet herself singlehandedly(also serving as a proof to her capabilities as a “Rogue” AI), killing VDBs directly connected to it in the process. She specifically protects V from the purge, kind of thanks to Johnny’s engram she noticed in the Relic.
It’s Alt.
Netwatch used them as a bridge to get to Alt, so she literally “fried” the bridge.
Don’t think Netwatch was hit as well.
V was protected because Alt could recognize his signature thanks to Johnny engram.
Alt. Mosley just wanted to know where the VDBs were so netwatch could keep an eye on them and stop them if they fucked with the black wall too much. Alt is the one who detected him being there and promptly fried the VDBs for what she thought was them leading netwatch to her. Weirdly tho she didn’t fry Mosley himself. It’s very clear and u can straight up ask Alt what happened to the VDBs, she’s very honest about her purging them.
