And it’s not just the raw visuals. It’s the story, music and animations too.

I actually remember pong on the classic Atari, then the commodore/apple days, then the 8086 cga graphics days. Eventually came the 320×200 pc/vga days, then the wolfenstein/doom ‘first person textured view days’. In time came the 3d-accelerator cards and Quake. That kept advancing. Now we’re largely into the realtime raytracing days, with the ai-accelerator days starting to come onto the scene too. It’s neat ‘living in the future’.

I know right, even 3 years after release it’s such an insane looking game. It really makes me excited for what they can do with their next games.

  3. Been playing games since 1984ish, and this current shit is a *miracle.* There are tons of great games over the years, but anyone who thinks that games were better in previous times are pretentious or blinded by nostalgia.

  4. Was a Super Nintendo kid, PS1 came out just before I hit my teens and I still remember the whole family sitting round the CRT controlling the dinosaur on that PS1 demo, everyone is disbelief at how real it looked.

My next graphical milestone would have been when I got the Xbox 360 and couldn’t stop looking at the puddle in rainbow 6 vegas, they weren’t Ray traced so no idea why I thought they were amazing either.

And it’s been cyberpunk which has blown me away again, so so pretty, and I’m a stinky series S user.

These are all just screenshots using photo mode. I play at 4K with everything turned on except Path Tracing. Though it works well enough, with over 60fps on average, it has poor frame timing that makes the game feel a lot less smooth. So I enable it only for photo mode. And the results are very impressive, I think.

What really got me the first time I played this game was how smoothly the neon lights reflected off of the car while driving at night. I only have 1280p so I’m sure the 4K must be beautiful!!

True! We’ve come a long way, and Cyberpunk is right at the top of the tree for graphics and storytelling.

I remember back when the first Tomb Raider came out and we thought those triangle tiddys were fuckin peak lmao. Crazy how fast everything has improved and it’s only going to get better each year.

I play with the lowest ray tracing setting at 1080p. First 40 hours or so were just jaw dropping. I couldn’t believe how good the lightning looks in this game. I remember just being blown away just staring at the neon lights coming from the wall in the club where u meet Evelyn for the first time. Sadly there comes a point where you kinda get used to it. Also my standard will be way higher for the next game I’ll play.

I’m actually mildly concerned about their swap to Unreal Engine 5. The RED engine is at the cutting edge of video game graphics at the moment and above all it makes the game more unique, not just another UE project. Different engines cause problems but they also bring benefits. I have faith they’ll make something amazing in UE, but I don’t think it’ll be the same.

    But, games aren’t here.

OK, this one is, and there’s a few other gems that do a similarly good job, but *most* games are just copy-pasta, bug riddled, content light, or just plain low effort. Or in the case of certain very large publishers, all of the above…

4K is amazing. I do run into some issues with raytracing, though.

I don’t even have ray tracing (I’m on series s) and cyberpunk still manages to look beautiful. I don’t think I’ve seen a game so beautiful since vanilla Skyrim

Oh yeah, right, Cyberpunk 2077 is a game I forgot… Clearly not real life…

My first game was Grand Theft Auto: Vice City so compare that to this is unbelievable. I can’t even even what the next generational leap is going to give us. Our eyes might actually need an upgrade to see it.
