I got this old system basically for free, so I decided to go all out on it. I’d much rather accidentally kill a 14 year old CPU than I would a new one! These old chips are also much more fun to overclock. You can’t get over 50% gains like I did here with a modern system
**Setup**
CPU – i5-760 – It had paste under the IHS, so it was a simple delid with a razor blade. I ended up mangling a couple of the surface mount caps, but it didn’t seem to hurt too much.
Motherboard – Asus P7P55D-E Pro
RAM – 4x2GB DDR3 Ballistix Tracer (The LEDs on these are way cooler than modern RGB IMO) I didn’t do any RAM overclocking this time around. I had a fan on it mainly to shut up the CPU fan post error.
I used a Corsair XC5 waterblock. Direct die mounting it with the stock LGA1200 mounting hardware seemed to work well enough. The screws were completely bottomed out, but it was enough pressure to boot and temps were what I would expect for this set up. Even with 1.6 Vcore I was in the high 40s under load, and the core to core delta was only a couple degrees.
I only ran CPU-Z and R15, but I’m probably going to get this out again in the future, so if you have any suggestions for what I should do with it I’m all ears. I might pick up some different socket 1156 chips, like an 875K or 880

R15 misreported the frequencies here. The top score was achieved at about 4560 MHz

I just started messing with a core 2 quad system. Got it to 3.4 from 2.83 using some cheap DDR2 667. I’m at the limit of the memory as is. These had locked multipliers so we’re stuck with FSB overclocking. I have no doubt the cpu could go higher
