Unpopular opinion: Why does most cyberpunk these days look like a new wave poster? (All purple and palm trees and neon grids in the sky?

My favorite cyberpunk consists of movies like Ghost in the Shell, Blade Runner, Akira, and The Matrix, and games like System Shock 1 and 2, Syndicate 1 and 2, and the whole Deus Ex series. I tend to like darker, moodier cyberpunk. Why does one of my favorite genres have to look like an 80s nostalgia fest.

    This is more of the Vaporwave aesthetic…which I don’t care for.
