I didn’t have a water cooling fail this bad, but just luckily modern PC cases have feet on the bottom and raise the tower off the desk, was playing Rust for a good 5-6hours, temps got hot and one of the hoses split, leaked it all out and I saw a big red puddle under my PC, the intake fan blades for the PSU was only just flicking the top of the puddle. Made my heart sink just as this picture did.

These acrylic reservoirs with inner threads are prone to crack when screwed on too tight. I had cracks forming on my first one but replaced it before a failure and made sure to not overtighten the new one.
Additionally an pressure relief valve (not water tight, needs air below) or a bellow to prevent overpressure in the loop when it heats up and expands is a good investment too.

Water cooling is all fun and games till something like this happens. If you are running a custom loop please check on it from time to time. I need to add coolant to my reservoir every few months to top it off from evap, thanks F@H lol. Always a good move to check the reservoir and fittings in the process.

For those of you who are wondering. My computer was still on and running fine. Fluid was still circulating, but there was air in the line. I shut down the computer safely.
the fluid dripped down the pump onto 1 of the intake fans and on the radiator. My superior designed 90 degree case only allows the fluid leaks to flow away from my components. fan still spins, i also have spares, and the radiator don’t care if it has fluid on the inside or outside.
I ordered a new reservoir today, should arrive next week.
I’ve never seen a Mason jar used as a reservoir. Classic and old skool.

Yeah I did custom loop liquid for 3 years as a bucket list item and I’m back to air with a newer rig that doesn’t turn my home office into a sauna from the heat it gives out
that reminds me its time for the yearly loop diagnostic check and fluid change

AIOs are the way to go……. they even make AIOs for newer GPUs. Custom Loops are cool and all but are higher maintenance than people lead you to believe. Liquid is superior to air, you cannot effectively air cool are Ryzen 9 5900X……. 2023 CPUs require liquid cooling, it’s just a matter of time before you will have to give up air cooling.

This is why I stick to air cooling, least when a fan dies, my PC doesn’t fry or risk frying.
