I know this is pushing it a little bit to fit in this subreddit, but it felt like the more appropriate place for this question. TL;DR: Wondering if I will see a significant performance increase from my i7-1185G7 laptop if I get an eGPU enclosure to connect to my TB4 dock.

More detail:

PC: Dell Rugged 5430 i7-1185G7 laptop with 32GB RAM and a 2TB SSD. Two TB4 ports.

Dock: WD22TB4

eGPU Enclosure: AKiTiO Node Titan (not purchased yet)

GPU: 1070 8GB from a friend for now until a nice deal comes along.

I’m going to be using a TB4 dock (theoretically confirmed to work daisy chained with eGPU connected to dock for a single cable solution) to connect my new laptop at my desk at home. I know the iGPU can handle multiple displays and higher resolutions without too much fuss on these 11th gen procs, but I have multiple high resolution high refresh monitors that I plan to use while multitasking with Audio/Video/Photo editing, 3D modeling, and light gaming going on. I would like to be able to utilize the full thermal capacity of the processor to do this without the extra heat from the iGPU straining to keep up.

Will I see a significant performance increase with the added GPU power? Has this been tested? The search terms for this bring up an ocean of gaming-only related posts and I didn’t get very far with my more specific case.

    Sure, the 1070 is way more powerful than the Iris iGPU in your processor. It’s gonna game better and, depending on the complexity of the 3D models you’re working on, render them faster.

    Your iGPU is not significantly contributing to the heat inside the CPU and it is accounted for when the thermal solution was designed. What you MIGHT observe, depending on the TDP of your CPU, is seeing the CPU boost a little higher thanks to the increased power budget allowed by the iGPU idling. We’re still talking about about 200MHz, not much more I think.
