How does an extra $35 of memory equate to a $365 markup???
You see this with GPU manufacturers too being stingy with VRAM despite the dropping GDDR6 prices the past few years on top of already buying in bulk at discounted rates direct from manufacturers.

What in Dafuq kind of screwed math could explain 8 = 16?
When I saw that statement, I could picture every apple engineer cringing slightly. Their memory is legitimately well designed and packaged well, but nothing is going to make 8 feel like 16 once you hit double-digit-GB utilization.
Resident-Variation21
Idk. Seems very stupid.
BUT the reviews I’ve seen have said that 8gb has been performing astonishingly well, and I’ve never ran into issues on my M1 air with 8gb ram
Aimero
Yeah and their 12 inch displays are like 49″ PC displays. Right?
divhon
In the age of AI the 8GB RAM identify itself as 16GB.
zeus1911
Can they launch a program that needs more then 8gb? Or will it error
nour926
Tell that to a company full of developers.

Shame I can’t download this magical RAM in my PC
CeleritasLucis
Yeah the files I’m opening in Vscode would like actual 16GB, instead of your new age bullshit 8gb
ItzCobaltboy
It’s all because we can’t run AAA Games on them to prove the point
SnuffleWumpkins
It would cost them virtually nothing to increase to 16gb and why the fuck is 24 even an option?
jonatizzle
Even the Verge review of the new 8gb M3 MacBook Pro said it struggled with 20+ tabs in Safari smh
cklaubur
What’s their definition of a gig, 2048 MB?
A-Delonix-Regia
Okay, can an 8GB MacBook handle 20 tabs on a Chromium browser like Vivaldi, Spotify, Cities Skylines (running on integrated GPU), Word, and Excel? If not, shut up.

Sooo…. How fast is the RAM? I can get a 16gb kit (8×2) and 6200mhz. Anyway, it’s crazy expensive to get more than base 8gb with Apple. This smells of trying to defend on 8GB with unattainable upgrade options for most apple heads.

I have a newish high-end gaming PC with 64GB and an older Macbook Pro with 8GB of RAM. I’m obviously using them for two different things, but I must say 8GB on Mac does feel much different than 8GB on Windows. Mac OS is just so much more lean and seems to have less shit going on in the background. Even the native alps seem much less RAM hungry. I kind of get what they are saying, but if I was buying a Mac in 2023 I’d expect 16GB standard.
Time-Variation6969
That can’t be true as Arm processors use more memory and handles the memory quite differently too.
Forbiddenjalepeno
Okay I know I’m going to be downvoted but let me be clear, I love my gaming PC – but I have an M2 air and have owned MacBooks for years. They said it in a dumb way but they’re not that wrong, Mac’s are incredibly efficient on memory management. Amazingly so actually, the entire OS is catered to their chips and their software. Personally my M2 is a 16gb, the only reason I upgraded is because I like to run VMs as well. I’ve had 8gbs before, the performance is the same for 75% of uses. It’ll always look “high” because it’s always keeping the ram used, but the performance is always snappy. Even in the Intel days it was pretty good, but now with apple silicon it’s spectacular.
THAT BEING SAID, it’s still scummy that 8gb is the minimum and the prices they charge to upgrade to 16 is *beyond ridiculous*, but yes I would say that 8gb on a Mac is far from the constraint that it is on PCs.

Spoiler alert: yes, it is
It’s like everyone here forgot iPhones exist and they do the same, humiliating Android phones with double the amount of RAM since the beginning.
SignalButterscotch73
No way is the memory compression good enough to double the effect of the RAM, looks like the typical “marketing guy doesn’t know what he’s actually selling so spouts impressive sounding bullshit”.

My system eats 800 MB after boot… Beat that, Apple.
Due-Ad-7308
8 -> 16 is obviously ridiculous and this is a silly thing to say.
That said, Apple’s memory management is pretty legendary. If they said an 8gb Macbook felt similar to a 12gb machine running Windows I’d be inclined to agree.

1080p from apple is 4k from pc too
