I’m not sure how to explain this, but every time I put my iPhone 13 mini on my laptop, it restarts. I’m not sure what kind of magic is causing this, but it doesn’t happen when I use other phones.

Try with a magnet.
It looks like a sensor for when the lid is closed
So basically, the iPhone has a bunch of magnets on the back for Magsafe. When you put it up to edge of the laptop like that, the laptop thinks that the lid is closed, because it uses magnets in the lid to sense when you close it.

I’ve ran into this several times in my career. Usually when setting up new work laptops and you try to stack them they will turn off like this. One time was a users bracelet. The iPhone has a magnet in it which is probably tripping the sensor.

Magnets, how do they work?
It’s def what people have said with the magnet. It also is not restarting. Easiest way to troubleshoot is to set closing the lid to do nothing. If it doesn’t happen there you go

Reed switch sensor, basically your phone magsafe magnet triggers the Reed switch on your laptop.
Everyone is jumping to this magnet theory pretty quick but I don’t think we should rule out ghosts just yet.
The razor has a magnet for sensing when the lid is closed. The back of your phone has magnets for both induction for wireless charging as well as nfc communication. That’s tripping the sensor in the laptop so it thinks you’re closing the lid.
If you change the settings for lid closing behavior this won’t happen anymore.

My original theory that your laptop was possessed by the ghost of a 9th century witch. But after reading the other comments magnets are the more likely answer.
there’s a magnet there that detects wether or not the screen is closed and your phone has magnets on the back. you’re basically tricking it into thinking that it’s closed.
Power options > chose what closing the lid does > do nothing.

It’s from the magsafe in your phone, it’s not turning your computer off, it’s putting it to sleep. When you close the laptop it uses magnets too tell the system that the lid has been closed.
Well, don’t do that
Same thing happen to mine when I had the Razer. I ended up returning it anyways.
Yup, don’t put phones on top of laptops palm rests. I’ve dealt with the same thing at my work. User didn’t know why his laptop kept shutting down while he was using it. Didn’t take me long to figure out it was because he was putting his phone on the palm rest.
Magsafe is triggering the sensor magnets underneath the palmrest forcing the computer to go into sleep mode.
This is the case for a lot of current laptops.
My m16 zephyrus did this too, I’m assuming the laptop thinks you closed the thing because of the magnet or something. No clue if that’s how it works but that’s my conclusion.
Back in my times putting a magnet anywhere near a screen or PC would be PC murder.
