Why is my damage so much less after the first orb for the Legion boss fight?

Basically the title! This is like my 5th attempt at this boss, and this time was even more ridiculous than before. The first orb clearly takes around 2k damage per shot – but after that no more than 770. Seriously, 4 rounds of 10-15x 6 round bursts of an Orange double PaP’ed Skullsplitter, not even able to destroy the second orb?
Hopefully, someone can tell me what I am doing wrong. Because I believe that this should not be happening, especially after the first orb was flawless.
