Have a seasonic 750 watt platinum should I upgrade my power supply as it pulls about 750-850 during intense loads from the ups outlet meter

    Yes, you really should not go over about 75% of the maximum rating of the power supply.

    PSU will draw more power then its rating because its not 100% efficient.

    What hardware do you have?

    If the UPS is just your pc, yeah. Your psu should really be topping out at ~800 watts, what are you running on?

    Is the 820W just the pc? Or the monitor and other things plugged into the UPS too?

    I don’t think it should be an immediate concern, as the internal over current protection would begin tripping before you caused damages to the PSU or PC.

    With that said, you should consider a larger unit. Most platinum and titanium units hit peak efficiency at around 60% full load.

    For that reason, I bought a Seasonic TX 1600. It’s hella overkill for my 7800X3D and 3090Ti, but it gives me tons of headroom and when gaming I’m hitting the sweet spot of the efficiency curve.

    Check the temps of the PSU, its probably sky high, that would probably be one of the biggest concerns. Running your PSU at it’s limit for long periods will shorten it’s lifespan considerably. Gotta keep the magic smoke from coming out.

    OP, you need a new power supply. If you keep going this way your PSU could just outright die. It just happened to my dad’s PC. They said that he was consistently drawing 50-100 w over what the PSU could reliably handle so it crapped out. Get a new one before yours craps out.

    Yes you should upgrade it. But also i think LTT did a test some time ago where the noticed that seasonic platinums are actually just restickered higher wattage gold models, meaning they can go above the rated wattage, but i wouldn’t play with this for safety reasons

    That’s a bomb/fire hazard waiting to happen even if there’s fail safes built into the psu, they are not always reliable.

    That psu is screaming. I generally go for 20% headroom under full load.

    Hello there, as all said if this is only the case, time to upgrade, if you have a better way of measuring the power consumption like smart outlets, you should double check, or just use a known electrical equipment to check if its measuring correct, i wouldnt trust a ups about the consumption, also check from pc power calculator to see if you need a bigger psu.

    what hardware is actually in your system? cpu, ram, mobo, gpu, fans, hdd, ssd, any extra cards, lots of periferals? while I don’t think its going to cause a fire(mostly because its seasonic), it will cause your psu to run outside of its efficiency range and maybe shorten its life span.

    ITT: A massive amount of idiots giving bad advice while not understanding how PSUs work.

    Input wattage *DOES NOT* equal output wattage.

    A 750w PSU that is outputting 750w will be drawing more than 750w from the wall.

    That being said, 750w ain’t enough for those specs.

    My dude, you need a 1000w+ power supply, that’s the minimum I would recommend for a stock i9 and 3090, let alone increased power limits and overclocked…

  18. So much nonsense advice in here. Should you get a bigger PSU? Probably. Do you absolutely need to? No.

    If the max you are seeing from your UPS is 850W, then your PSU is likely peaking below its 750W rated limit because it is probably operating around 80-85% efficiency. If it was a cheapo PSU, I wouldn’t trust its overcurrent limits.
