I used to use various antivirus programs, even Avast back in the day.
I finally realized when Windows 10 came out that all you need is Defender, the occasional Malwarebytes scan and uBlock Origin (now with Firefox).
Above all, it’s about using the noggin.

I’ve been using ESET for 6-7 years and I haven’t had any problems with performance, annoying popups nor anything else
And it definitely had prevented me from installing some sketchy programs, visiting scam websites etc.

Nope, a lot of viruses don’t care about your common sense unfortunately. Using common sense + defender is a little better, but using 3rd party software like Bitdefender, ESET or Kaspersky (even if it’s a free version) is still best, in combination with malwarebytes now and then.

Idk you can usually snag a promo for like 3 years or something of kaspersky premium for about $15 bucks from time to time. I had bought it before years ago just because it was so cheap, but all that shit is more of a nuisance than anything.
I fall under #1: Id probably pay for a virus just to give my antivirus that I spent money on something to do to get my money’s worth.

I haven’t had an AV installed since the early 2000’s and turn off Windows defender after every update. I do an occasional malware scan but that’s about it. I still have a few files left over from my days on the seven seas that register as malware but they’re clean.

Either just use Windows defender or just try to not get a virus. Windows defender is not bad. You don’t need to pay anything and it’s not a thing ĺike MacAffee that is just -648161561515616516151545151615161515641566 points. The first thing to do is to unnninstall antivirus on prebuilts. Maybe if you are like high value company, it’s good to use.

You forgot to include installing Windows updates alongside common sense. Defender qmd common sense can’t save you if your PC is full of holes from neglected updates in the event you eventually *do* make a mistake.

I use kaspersky standart membership for 3 devices 2 years subscription, not only it protects my devices well, it also notices me when an application is using my microphone/camera etc. and notices me when there is an issue with windows files and fixes it, deletes temp file with just one click instead of me doing it manually with windows + r and select all files. 10/10 antivirus, will subscribe again in 2025 once my subscription ends

Maybe I’m misremembering, I could have just F’d up,but I’m pretty sure I got viruses back in like, 2009 simply being in google images. Not even clicking on anything.
So now I go forward with the belief the internet is just permiated with viruses. You’ll get them on totally trustworthy sites without even clicking if you have no protection running.
(probably pure paranoia, but I haven’t had a virus since then)

Common sense is currently offline indefinitely in most places, luckily windows defender is there as a backup.
