It depends on your needs. There are dual monitor stands that will to hold one monitor and one laptop. Another option is to buy a docking station for the laptop and buying a second monitor. You can also buy an hdmi source switch. So you can switch between both computers on one screen with the laptop docked.

If this was me, I would have the monitor, along with my keyboard and mouse, as far left as I can then have the laptop act as the second monitor off to the side.
You always want your main monitor straight ahead of you. Definitely get something to raise the laptop. I’d even just get another cheap monitor and eliminate the laptop needing to be open at all with a dock.
