The ability to slice through multiple enemies, block hits, push zombies back and maybe some kind of bleed mechanic could help them find a new roll.
Right now melees are best for single target damage or as a backup to trigger ammo mods while using a gun. They struggle with crowd control and rely on ammo mods to kill hordes.
Of course this brings new challenges to balancing, melees can very quickly be garbage or overpowered.
