Fuck that read the books. Show ruined it. The 3 books are some of the best in cyberpunk and military aci fi. If you like Richard K. Morgan he also has a dark fantasy series featuring a homosexual swordsman, The Steel Remains.

Altered carbon is great, I’ve watched the series three times at this point. As I understand it, it’s a pretty good adaptation and the series ends where the book do/did. I’ve been hoping that we may see a return of the series if there are ever more novels to adapt.

First season, yes. Kinnaman was absolutely perfect in the role and.. also very nice to look at.
I made it half an episode in season 2 and called it. Shame, ’cause the show had such promise.

I always feel like Kovacs in the first season is extremely empowering, he operates well on his own, he has a strict morality that makes him admirable amid all the corruption, he’s a haunted man that pulls himself together. Also he kicks ass.
Kovacs in the second season is just so unlikable. He gets his ass handed to him almost every episode, he’s upstaged narratively by his supporting actors, he’s a dick to Poe for most of the season. I’d go so far to say watching the second season, I felt disempowered. Maybe that was the purpose, but if that’s the case then the showrunner vastly misunderstood what made the first popular.
Also the change in actors, while it makes sense, is just so disconcerting when you’re not reading a novel. I never was as connected to Mackie as I was to Kinnaman in the role.
