So, I’ve been trying to decide for a while what GPU to upgrade to. I’ve been eyeing the PowerColor 7900xtx Hellhound for a while and Amazon has a layaway option for it, which is a nice bonus. Should I go for it at $889 and use layaway or start stashing money under my mattress and hope there is a better deal when I have enough to buy outright?
Also, is this a good card to look at? With previous cards, I’ve either bought xfx or EVGA so I don’t know a whole lot about this company. I don’t really care too much about ray tracing, and would rather have the extra RAM over what Nvidia offers in their cards. If I shouldn’t go with team red, I’m open to debate here too.
My current rig has a Ryzen 5 3600x and 16gb of RAM. However, I am also planning on upgrading to either a 5800x3d or an 7800x3d closer to the end of the year. I am currently running a GTX 1070, so the GPU would be the biggest upgrade.
I appreciate all insight given!

You should bite the bullet if you really think it’s a good deal. The 1070 while it looks to be on it’s way out is still perfectly capable of running most games. Should upgrade soon though. I would get both it when you get the 7800x3d because you won’t get full usage out of the gpu with a 3600x.
Enjoy the drivers!

Also, this was the last Radeon card I owned, so my knowledge of the general experience with team red is slim to none these days.
There is a reason why they are cheaper, so if you dont mind sacrificing reliability and quality, then go ahead and take a bite. This card has the same Vram as a 4090, and it’s 1/4 the price. To me, that raises red flags but to each their own. I’ve had one experience with AMD cards, and that was a negative one with a brand new 6800, it was flickering right out of the box, so I sent it back for a refund, never again tbh. I might just be really unlucky, but I’ve been using nvidia cards since 2005 and never had one fail prematurely. In fact, I still use a 1080 sometimes on my spare pc.
Edit. Sorry, I meant a 1/3 price of 4090 since we’re talking about the 7900xtx. 1000-1200 bucks in my country and the 4090 go around 3-4K
Indeed you should. Though this depends on how quickly you can pay the layaway – if you take too long it might get cheaper – or does Amazon match prices lowering on your layaway?
So I want to be clear that I am not some sort of anti-AMD fanboy.
In fact, I have a 7800x3d and I believe it to be the absolute best gaming CPU on the market.
That said, I would not touch an AMD GPU. The driver issues alone are simply not worth it. They don’t hold their resale value nearly as well as Nvidia. They don’t play with dynamic refresh (free sync vs gysnc) as well as Nvidia. Across the board dollar for dollar I really feel like Nvidia offers the superior product in every class of GPU.
The fact it has the same amount of VRAM as a 4090 but has wildly less compute isn’t just a strange choice to me as well.
It is sad, but there just isn’t competition in the GPU space right now like there is in the CPU space.
With the x3d chips AMD is moving the ball forward and taking back market share and doing something special. Their GPUs are nothing more than “also rans”
In your particular situation, any GPU you buy is going to be gimped by your CPU. I would probably do one of two things:
1. Save for a new Mobo / CPU combo now and but that first.
2. Buy the best green team GPU that you can afford now with the knowledge that it will be your long term GPU after your eventual rebid. To be clear though your performance is going to be very bottlenecked in the $900 GPU range
7900xtx is amazing card for that price and would recommend you to buy unless you have money for 4090.
It’s a good deal, i’d go for it.
Also, make sure to get that 5800X3D soon, the 3600 ia going to be a big bottleneck if you’re not at 4K. I wouldn’t bother with the 7800X3D, it’s way more expensive and you wouldn’t feel the difference
For that price? Hell yeah!!!
I bought this exact card on this deal and have no regrets. 7900XTX is a beast, and AMD’s software is better than I remember. I thought I’d miss some NVIDIA features coming from a 3070, but there are literally none that I haven’t found a great replacement for so far.
Aye, nice price.
You should get 5800x3d and 33gb ram aswell just like you plan to do
Pretty good for high fps 1440 or 60+FPS in 4k.
You’ll need to adjust the fan curve yourself to shut up the card and once you do the coil whine will be a touch more noticeable but it’s nothing a typical computer case can’t muffle.
I’d say so. I just snagged the spectral Hellhound yesterday to finish my build.
Amd ? No.
Geforce only
Got 7900xtx, card is a damn beast. Go for it
Can’t say anything about the card itself but I do have a 6700xt hellhound and it’s a great card, runs cool and quiet. Just know it doesn’t have addressable RGB and is just one ice blue like color. Still looks great though. Power Color is a extremely reputable and has been making AMD cards for a LONG time
