hey guys when this post is popular let me know im curious too

  2. ConsistentCatThings

I would definitely say that the biggest expense was upfront. There are always plenty of sales happening on digital store fronts like Steam, and having the freedom to take my game collection just about anywhere provided I have an internet connection to download games to a laptop/ a new desktop is great. I was able to pick up the entire metro series for 15 bucks, and the same for witcher 3. I 100% recommend making the shift to PC just for the sheer amount of money you can save on sales alone.

  3. OkOffice7726

No. But I do alot more than just play games on a PC.

  4. Georgia_Couple99

It was for the first actual gaming pc I built. Currently, I’m not sure anymore

  5. IM1GHTBEWR0NG

Takes years to see the savings, and by then I’ve upgraded. It hasn’t been my experience. That said, I buy every console and still run a PC, so saving money isn’t my strong suit.

  6. josephseeed

The PC cost is definitely a big up front cost, but I own many more games than I ever would on console because of Steam sales. I haven’t paid launch price for a games since around 2018

  7. Surprise-Fiat

Sorta, I pirated a lot of games on PC but only played a handful

Wasn’t too different to how I played on PS4 mainly switching between 4-5 games

However, whilst this isn’t always the case used console discs are almost always cheaper or equally priced to their PC counterparts

For example I wanted to play Callisto Protocol which was £35 on PC through those key sites, I picked a used PS5 disk for £10 on eBay

I wanted to play Dead Space remake, cheapest on PC using those Sus Steam account keys was £40, picked a brand new PS5 copy from supermarket for £20

CoD games are almost always more expensive on PC, plus you can’t resell digital copies unlike with a physical disk

However having the ability to play a massive catalogue of last gen games without any FPS caps, modding, exclusives etc makes PC worth it for those few instances where you do pay more for games

Plus paying to play online is a scam, so my PS5 is just a single player machine, kinda a waste for games that have half the content behind the online Paywall

PC isn’t always cheaper but it’s certainly much better value

  8. Well you can also just acquire games differently

  9. CaptainCatgirls

I would say you do save money getting a PC instead of paying a $60 subscription. As well as steam having more modification options for games and the accessibility I have to other applications like OBS, Adobe, and even CSP that I would never have the access to on a console.

  10. unabletocomput3

When I first started, yes. The most powerful console was the Xbox one x and this was roughly 2-3 years before the series x and series s came out. It was a ryzen 3 2200g and rx 580 8gb and while I can’t fully say the cpu was faster and the gpu was about on par with the one x I’ll say it was roughly $200 usd cheaper with no subscriptions.

Did I have many issues? Absolutely with my psu being junk (which took me a year to fix) and my first cpu being inserted wrong causing it to bend some pins but I’d say it was worth it.

Is it still that way today? Kinda? You can build an equivalent/slightly better system to the series x for roughly $200 more and without paying online subscriptions for 2 or so years without including other subscriptions such as game pass would make it cheaper overall. The biggest issue is the starting cost and price to performance on many current gpus, getting a 4090 and i7 13700k or ryzen 7 5800x3d would be faster and probably cost effective to the consoles but it’s also going to be $2000+ most of the time.

  11. I am a console gamer too and pc gaming is cheaper than console gaming,

  12. rattlelibre

its not a matter of saving money and you don’t need that to justify being on a PC. It is so superior its not even a debate.

  13. TrickyWoo86

Yes, because I need a decently performant PC for work anyway so I saved the cost of a console outright and the games are generally cheaper.

  14. lurowene

No absolutely not the entry cost to a PC is easily a console + 3 years of game pass + 10 new full prices games.

But for those of us that walk the PC pass, we justify the expenses.

  15. I’d say if you’re already a PC gamer, it’s economically sound to stay one.

Right now for AAA gaming though? You’d be saving maybe 20 bucks per new release thanks to the grey market … meanwhile a good GPU that would last a while (4070, am using one) is more expensive on it’s own than a console…

See that’s why it work for someone who’s already a PC gamer : I feel okay spending 650e on an GPU, considering it’s the only part I’m updating this generation, so I’d be making back my “loss” compared to a console rather quickly.

But for a complete rig, something that would cost around 200 bucks without the peripherals? (Let’s be honest, a M&K and a monitor are not household items, especially compared to a TV), you’d better be prepared for the long run.

Honestly… see If you’d be okay with a steam deck, it can run everything since 3.5 ( a beta update) at a lowish quality, and obviously the PC library you’d build would transfer to a proper rig later.

  16. toxicThomasTrain

if you buy only budget parts and are okay with performance at about the same level as consoles, then maybe it saves money? I’m not sure, my motivation for building a pc was to get better performance than on console, which I certainly did but I can’t say I’ve saved money when the price of a 4090 is 3 times the amount for an entire console. No regrets tho

  17. TheThreeBagels

Yes. I own hundreds of quality games and havent spent over $700. I would have spent thousands if all my games were priced like they were on console. Not to mention piracy.

  18. Neither_Rich_9646

I like how my PC gaming rig doubles as a PC. Me and the wife also have a personal laptop for taking on vacation and couch based Web browsing but my gaming rig is my main PC. I can’t file my taxes or manage my finances on my Xbox.

  19. not upfront, but you can access the internet, blender, and other apps. also vr, modding, more customization.

  20. sylinowo

After buying a pc I feel like I’ve lost most in the sense of me buying so many games and playing none of them. Being given the freedom of a desktop environment where I can do so much other than play games is the problem. When om my ps5 it’s just games. Install the game like I would on pc, but now all I can do is launch it. I can’t google about it or easily pull up youtube for whatever reason. No discord servers or dms to distract me. Just games

  21. wegbored

The price entry to PC gaming has always been the biggest pain point for most people, but these days, the price difference is negligible between say latest gen consoles and the ROG Ally.

  22. DoesntPlay2Win

Bigger upfront cost with the hardware, but buying games on sale. If you ask me, it all kind of balances out unless you know the hardware you’re working with will last a long, *long* time.

In my case, it’s probably not true because I’m already thinking about buying a new GPU even though the one I have isn’t that old. Also, because my last PC *literally fucking exploded* when I was playing Fallout 4. So, the current setup I have is another chunk of change down the drain.

The GPU was salvaged from the old PC, in case someone felt like asking.

  23. Theio666

Not true since I have to have good PC for study/work anyway, so having console means just additional spendings, not savings lol.

Also, regional pricing is much better on PC.

  24. KeaboUltra

Eh, i just see it that I spent money. You don’t save if you expend the resources. I never played any other console but Nintendo stuff. Built a PC after a string of issues with Nintendo But I still play my fix of Nintendo games. I could sort of see if you are coming from a PS4 or Xbox but those consoles do a pretty good job. I think my biggest reason for getting a PC and “saving” is to prevent me from needing to buy a PS4 just to play something like Days Gone or HZD.

Other than all that I definitely save on games though. I buy on instant-gaming and haven’t had any issues but am prepared if it happens. For me specifically. I didn’t save. I spent $2000 to build a work+project+gaming machine

  25. madeforthis_1984

“The more you buy, the more you save.”

  26. Mexi-Ten

I never understood having to pay extra to use multiplayer. I refuse PS, Xbox, and Nintendo online services cause it’s robbery.

I have a Switch, people try to justify NSO with having access to N64, SNES, and etc..

I’ve been emulating N64 since UltraHLE, it was super fun to see Mario 64 run on my Slot 2 Celeron.

  27. millanstar

Unpopular opinion: it isnt, as long you are building a PC that is meant to be better than a $500 console it will never be, this is an enthusiast hobby, stop lying newcomers on that is cheaper on the long run, it is totally much worth it yes, but it is not by any mean cheaper, neither upfront nor in the long run, even games i can find second hand games on console much cheaper that they have ever been on Steam (happened to me with RDR2 and cyberpunk)

  28. DifficultyVarious458

Xbox Series X is enough for gaming alone. Used on ebay £320-350. Build APU PC for everything else.

stack 3 years of gamepass ultimate using xbox live around $100 and you are set dont need to buy any game at all.

  29. Relevant_Scallion_38

On Consoles I usually only get like 12 games and borrow a few from friends before the next gen comes out and have to pay a subscription to play online.

On PC I pay like 1.5-2X the price of a new console. But now have +300 games and 90% of them are free. The ones I did pay for were cheaper than the console counterparts. Plus I get access to wider variety of genres like MMOs, Moba’s, TCG’s, etc. (But a lot of those genres and games probably exist on console nowadays.

    Oh PC mods are KING

  30. MysterD77

Yup. Just buy games dirt-cheap in sales on digital stores and from Bundle Sites, etc – and you’ll be good.

It’s how I got so many games backlogged and “owned”.

  31. Eh no, you probably won’t save much money, but you will likely enjoy having a PC that can do a bunch besides only playing games so you’re getting more value for your money.

  32. Turnbob73

I have 100% spent more money on gaming in general when I switched over to PC.

And no, I don’t agree with pirating.

To clarify: I’ve had a steam account since 2009, but was just gaming on a mediocre laptop (mainly just playing on consoles) up until 2019. And I for sure spend far more money throughout the year now than I ever did when I was on my PS4.

Overall, I still like pc gaming so much more, but this pathetic circlejerk is cringey.
