What are your thought on cyberpunk ‘always being good’?

Story hasn’t changed, and always felt it was good in that sense.

Would’ve liked the city to be more than pretty backdrop.

Edit: Was on PC so it worked fine for me.

  2. LaserGadgets

First day, first run, 95 hours, no problems, so yeah.

  3. FumoStrongestSoldier

I bought it day day one for ps4 and I can’t complain

  4. Playing on pc on release and only referring to the pc version, I only had one major bug in a side quest, which I ended up just not finishing. My experience on that playthrough was otherwise great. Immersion, story, quests all were great. Didn’t really focus on the police ai, lifeless npcs in the city etc. (which was problematic for plenty of people), but didn’t detract from my enjoyment of it.

  5. I would say it was never awful. The game launched seriously flawed in terms of balance and gameplay, we would lose knives when we threw them and we couldn’t retrieve them for example or people could just beat smasher with a joke weapon. It was also very unreliable for a lot of people.

So it was average game with some strong points, after several updates it is now a very good game.

It always had potential, but much of it was wasted. There is still something of a disconnect between the narrative premise of “you have 2 weeks to live at most” and “have this huge open world and do an RPG” that is never gonna change, which is a shame.

Beyond that, what was there in the open world – the stories, the gameplay, the visuals, the characters and the music was always very solid, but often tarnished by bugs and glitches and strange design decisions completely wrecking the balance and immersion the game tried to go for.

Much of all this has been fixed with 2.0. I’ve noticed fewer bugs, even better visuals, more good music, and the gameplay rework has been an extremely welcome change of pace as someone who likes to be consistently challenged in an RPG instead of just being able to one-shot anything with 0 effort or threat to my own life because I dared to do side quests.

The gameplay additions of police chases and car combat are also super nice to fuck around with.

The game always suffered from wasted potential and it’s still not 100% there quite yet… but especially with certain mods? It’s pretty damn close to perfect, now.

  7. Played it on release, never had much bug related issues. Sure had its flaws but the general story of the game was good from the get-go.

  8. Accomplished_Rip_352

To be honest if you forget about the bugs and performance issues (which is a big ask) the game hasn’t changed that much from launch to the previous update and fundamentally is pretty similar . The main content and side quests have Basiclly remained the same since launch and also how you interact with them aswell .

  9. MartianFromBaseAlpha

The game has always been good, but at the same time it’s been broken and undercooked as fuck. There’s no contradiction here.

  10. MorenaLedovec

as luch asi want to say, it wasnt always that good, the story is top tier still imo, the gameplay was fine but damn the rough release madi it a 6-7/10, now id say its probably 9.5/10

  11. Nekommando

GTX1660ti rig here, never had major game breaking bugs since launch. Game was good for mid range PC from the beginning

  12. DeliciousAnything977

I would agree if you had 2080ti-3k series above card at release date lol 😂… i still had some bugs on pc and such but, nothing like what I seen on console..

  13. RdJokr1993

At best, you can say the original pre-2.0 game was a 7/10 game. I’d rate it somewhere along those lines, because it has good foundations, but sloppy presentation that’s only masked by how good the graphics are, and the really high moments of the story. So, not a terrible game, but definitely did not live up to the hype, and just calling it good/bad is a blanket statement that doesn’t describe what it did right and wrong.

  14. Soggy-Software

Cyberpunk has always been good. It was demolished for 1. Releasing buggy and 2. Overpromising and underdelivering. If they didnt release too early, on last gen and didn’t go on a crazy marketing campaign it would be regarded as one of the best RPGs ever. In my opinion of course.

  15. Quantum_Object

Gaming wise, loved it from day one. – such a cool game.

but I had it on PS4 and it literally become unplayable.. I think I played about half the game and I got to one point and it just kept crashing…it wouldn’t work again from that point so sent it back and got a refund.. bought it again about a year later and it played better.. it was more stable but the game still looked like shit, everything looked off in colour and the lighting was absolutely dreadful. – it didn’t look good on my PS4 at all. – then got a PS5 in the summer.. finally convinced myself to play it again and oh boy.

I wished they just waited to release it on the PS5 with an update 2 patch.. would have just solved EVERY SINGLE ISSUE from day one and they may have even won a GOTY award for it.

I wish we’d have got *this* version we have now instead of the steaming pile of shite we got that has took.. what? 3 years to finally sort out.

  16. This game was a straight lie from what they said it would be they even change the category to ACTION RPG at the release, but y’all forgot everything

  17. jordgoin

What I loved about the game has never changed. Story, characters, music, etc were never really “patched’. Still it always depends on what you wanted out of the game. I always wanted a great CDPR story and characters and I got that day one.

  18. Dis7urbios

If the game had launched on release without any major bugs or performance issues it would have been a great game but not even close to its full potential.

They transformed the game from a good game to a must-play game for people who like the genre. If the game got released in the 2.0 state, it would have been the GOTY. Even if got released this year in this state it would be one of the main GOTY contenders.

  19. Sorry-Opinion-5506

People really forgot it was so fucking scuffed at release it had to be remove from the Sony store huh.

  20. Sir_Davros_Ty

I agree. Played it on release and adored it. I played on Xbox X so maybe I was one of the lucky ones. But my experience was only ever hugely positive. It’s just gotten better with each update and patch. Was a 9/10 for me at release, so I imagine update 2.0 & PL will push that to a 10.

  21. *It always was.*

*Bugs just break the game sometimes.* *I saw the intention immediately, and then it was simply a matter of waiting for the bugs to get fixed.*

  22. At first it wasnt enjoyable bc of the bug and optimisation, but the story was good, sadly, none of it was likeable bc of the same problem I said before.

But now even before 2.0, it was an Amazing game, and they did it twice with the same game

  23. ShadowRomeo

I agree that the game was already good even at Day 1, on PC that is, on consoles it was an absolute shitshow that is even barely playable, heck even PC had certain bugs, but nowhere near as bad as famously documented footages straight from the last gen PS4 / Xbox One was.

  24. LewdManoSaurus

I agree it was always good. I played on PC at launch and had a great time. Didn’t run into any game breaking bugs and had a fairly smooth experience with minor things happening like floating NPCs or being yeeted into the air from bumping vehicles. The patches post launch excluding 2.0 haven’t really changed my overall experience since launch.

  25. It was always a good game. It just had too many issues at launch. That plus the performance fiasco with prev gen consoles just gave people a field day to criticise the game.

The broken promises thing has always been overblown. They failed to deliver on many features people expected but most of those weren’t actually promised. The reason this narrative stuck is because people were mad about performance, bugs and certain systems being poorly implemented. When you get so many small issues the community turns into a mob and blows everything out of proportion.

I played for 20 minutes at launch and put it on pause until I upgraded my PC. After playing it after Edgerunners I can confidently say it’s one of my favourite games of all time. And that’s mainly because of the story and world. These things didn’t change. So it can’t have been bad at launch. Just flawed.

Also I don’t agree that the city feels lifeless or ever did. Cyberpunk is the first truly immersive open world imo. A city is supposed to feel a bit like this because people just don’t want to talk to each other. Other open world games feel way more shallow and empty. Obviously it could be better but I can’t think of a single open world game that does a better job.

  26. Cersei-Lannisterr

Honestly enjoyed it, just felt as if the city didn’t feel alive enough. More random events, more interiors, more little things that indicate the city is interactable, more shops, items are usable, etc.

That’s really it, the game as it is is extremely great and I’ve enjoyed every bit of it, but I honestly expected a bit more to do…

  27. UWUquetzalcoatl

I got Lucky, whole game with only two bad bugs and still got to enjoy it for what it was. So I would say it was a good game past the bugs and other bs.

  28. MrTastix

It’s revisionist history and delusional as fuck.

**Disclaimer: I overall enjoy the game for what it is now, and have since at least 1.6, when the majority of bugs and gameplay stuff was sorted out but it’s good to remind people of the total shitstorm Cyberpunk was at launch. It’s also wise to keep CDPR’s feet to the flame lest their unchecked hubris returns.**

At best the game was good, but neither great nor outstanding. Had the marketing properly matched the output I really don’t think it’d have had as big of an issue outside the performance stuff, which was unacceptable and without excuse. CDPR spent way too much effort trying to market it as the definitive open world game, going so far as to say it was “the most immersive open world RPG to date”. But it wasn’t and honestly, still kind of isn’t, and a lot of this was largely down to the lack of miscellaneous things you can do outside wanton murder and the AI just being straight forgettable.

Cyberpunk isn’t actually the buggiest game I played on launch, that title goes entirely to Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, but Pathfinder was far more niche, Owlcat without anywhere near the same reputation as CDPR, and ultimately Pathfinder *was* hiding an absolute masterpiece of a game under the veil of buggy garbage it released with, whereas Cyberpunk 2077 was mostly just sci-fi Witcher 3 – good, but hardly “the most immersive open world RPG to date” as their marketing trailers repeatedly claimed.

Oblivion is often memed on for the jank NPC interactions they have with each other and their often weird dialogue, but at the time the idea of NPC’s have schedules and interacting with each other in such a manner was novel. Cyberpunk doesn’t have this and still doesn’t. Civilians can appear and disappear out of nowhere, they will stay in the same place if you skip time in one location (completely unlike Oblivion or Skyrim), and them reacting to you firing a gun or getting too close in a car isn’t anymore immersive than it was when Grand Theft Auto 3 did it.

None of this is bad. It’s all slightly better than The Witcher 3’s NPC’s who mostly just stayed in the same place yelling jolly catchphrases such as “[Pam pa ram pam pam pa ram pam pa ram](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VD5tXQRXrbQ)”, it’s just not as revolutionary as the CDPR marketing team tried to make it out.

This is without mentioning the lack of meaningful choice within the story and how railroaded you ultimately are. Lifepaths were hugely criticised both at launch and to this day for their lack of overall weight. People expected more of them than what we got and CDPR leaned far too heavily into the tired trope of “Your choices matter!” Cyberpunk 2077 has some fantastic writing in places (there’s some missed opportunities here and there but overall it’s pretty good) and some of the choices *do* feel like they have real weight, but lifepaths weren’t one of them.

Then we come to performance, which is generally the coup de grace and the true moment of failure for most people. It’s not good enough to claim it was okay for people on PC rocking the best hardware at the time because honestly, it wasn’t. It was *very* hit and miss. PC players fared significantly better than console players but stuttering and crashes were still common, alongside all the numerous quest-breaking bugs that almost everyone experienced sooner or later.

But console players suffered the worst, and you cannot rightly say the game was good when Sony got so tired of CDPR’s bullshit they just told them to fuck off outright, removed the game from being sold for PS4, and then gave automatic refunds to anyone who wanted them. This was completely unprecedented for Sony, and that alone should really be the nail that drives all this white-washing in the coffin where it belongs.

But I think it’s worse than this, because the game was being actively developed and marketed for those supposed “last-gen consoles”. They weren’t “last-gen” when Cyberpunk was *supposed* to be released back in 2019, and they sure as fuck weren’t “last-gen” when CDPR started development after Blood and Wine. Neither the PS5 nor the Xbox Series X would even release until well into 2020, well after when the game was *supposed* to release, a date they delayed 3 times! CDPR didn’t have the balls to shitcan last-gen development back in 2018, the earliest they’d have been given dev kits for the consoles, and instead kept leading people on.

The fact remains that had Cyberpunk 2077 “always been good” they wouldn’t have needed to spend almost 3 years fixing it, ultimately releasing only one commercial expansions post-launch, as opposed to The Witcher 3 getting two paid-for expacs a mere year after it released (and honestly, given CDPR’s crunch culture, those were probably too early, too).

I’m someone who was highly critical of the game on release, but I would likely go back and change any perception I had of it being “awful” in particular. Mediocre is the word I’d have used. Nowhere near as bad as some games I’ve played but nowhere near as good as it should have been. “Unacceptable” is the word I did use, because my core problem wasn’t just the gameplay but the nature of how it released, particularly on console.

So tl;dr the game was good but not anywhere near as much a masterpiece as people expected of the company after The Witcher 3, a game that generally *is* considered a masterpiece. It was full of a ton of missed opportunities, still is in some regard (mostly story related) and ultimately would have fared better had CDPR been honest with people from the start, or 2018 at the very least, instead of dragging on with their accursed marketing strategy that I, frankly, can only call total fraud.

Haven’t played 2.0 yet as I kept crashing in benchmarks, but I loved the game at launch (on PC). I certainly had issues with performance at times and some bugs, but the game kept me coming back for 105 hours. It was always good, although not great, for me.

Curious if I’ll feel 2.0 will change my opinion of it.

  30. Dr_Chops

Played it on PC since launch and never had a bad time.

I bought into the hype and 1.3? was just not for me due to the immersion breaking nature:

    * Permanently upgrading your gear. Upgraded weapons with crafted components were worse than what you found.
    * Vehicle handling was horrible. Tapping keys made your vehicle jitter around.
    * The menus had like a weird flow to them. I am looking at you perk menus.
    * Main story writing had a lot of continuity issues (of who knows what). I literally called the writing horrendous.

    Changes to now:

    * As long as you got T2 gear, you seem to be good to go. The system is now good. Non intrusive, and I do not mind.
    * Vehicles handle smoothly. Could need some fluff so you feel the weight of vehicle. The only major gripe I have is that it is 2077, and some cars still have tires with no grip. It is now almost fun just driving around, but it feels a bit “dangerous” still, due to the feeling of a lack of control of the vehicle at high speeds (which is realistic, but is it “fun”?). Also wish we got a KM/H setting. While sure it is set in the US which uses MPH, it is in a weird way immersion breaking if you have to figure out how fast you are going.
    * Menus are fine now. Perk menus have a clean flow to them. Navigating the character menus is a bit tough in the beginning still, but I got used to it. Took me just 6hrs of playtime to figure out how to access the shard menu. (don’t laugh at me I -> ESC -> Shards under Journal). Wish we could access it just directly from the journal menu.
    * I did not finish the heist and the missions after yet, so I do not know if the continuity issues are still there. Some people were saying they fixed stuff, but I will be the judge of that for myself.

  32. It always was good, just had some issues 😅 now they’ve fixed pretty much everything
