On a scale of 1-10, how would you rate Mob of the Dead? I’ll start:

I’m going to be honest, in my opinion mob of the dead is a lackluster map. The setup feels slow and tedious no matter how fast you do it and by the time you are all setup the map is boring.

But the maps atmosphere, location, and story is great though

I’ll give it a very, very generous 7.95/10

There ain’t any perfect maps in CoD Zombies. But not gonna lie, I think Mob comes the closest. It’s beautiful, atmospheric, fun to play, and was the beginning of arguably the best run Zombies had (Mid BO2-BO3, in retrospect I’d also include BO4 in there, even if some wouldn’t). There’s few cons to speak of, but I’ll try to list some.

Yeah, low perk variety isn’t ideal. And since there isn’t a free perk easter egg, Deadshot’s kind of just left in the dust. Bit of a shame. The main EE only being possible with at least two players is a shame, as well. At least it’s one of the easier ones, for those getting into it. And lastly, gathering the fuel tanks to go back to the Golden Gate Bridge can be somewhat repetitive. Would’ve been nice if there was a side EE or something which let the plane fuel up instantly after you used it.

For pros? Yeah, just about everything else. An amazing celebrity cast, imo easily the best “one and done” crews we got. Each character having a lot of depth to them, and demons to face. The environment is top notch, combining Alcatraz with hell itself is a combination that worked beautifully, especially for the story the map was trying to tell (which is probably the best standalone story in a map, imo). Afterlife is a really fun new gimmick, and kinda makes this the perfect “complicated” map for casual players to start out with. It’s hard, but you’ll always have at least three lives (more if you play well) on solo. And it’s incorporation in the setup process is also well done. The Wonder Weapons are really fun to use! The Blundergat being a strong, well designed, well *sounding* shotgun, and the Acidgat, being a great Wonder Weapon not so much for it’s killing potential, but for it’s ability to save you with ease. The Golden Spork and Hell’s Retriever/Redeemer also add a lot to the map, the Redeemer in particular being tons of fun to use. Brutus is a perfect boss zombie, in my eyes. He’s not an annoyance to kill, but he’s still threatening, able to easily shut you down if you aren’t careful, in addition to locking out perks, the box, etc. Electric Cherry is a helpful new perk, especially combined with the reload heavy Wonder Weapons. Love the pun, too. And lastly (though I could go on), that intro, man. So good, sets everything up perfectly.

Man, Mob is great. So many years after it’s release, and there’s still a good argument for it being the best things get. It’s got some slight issues, as everything does, but I can’t even pretend that this map isn’t astonishing. I agree with your rank, 9.5/10

Damn I was late today. I both love and hate Mob, it is both super fun and super boring. Many things that are better and worse depending on the experience you are looking for. I personally like a map where I don’t keep doing the same thing every three rounds, but it does offer up plenty of small side Easter eggs to do which breaks up the repetition.

Solid 8.7 for the uniqueness of the map and the introduction to two of my favorite items the blundergat and Hells retriever

MOTD is my favorite map, mostly for the reasons you stated. I think you actually missed a few underrated things, or lacked the space to include them. For example:

1: I think it has the best setup process in all of zombies, in line with SOE, which is heavily inspired by MOTD. It contains puzzles that forces people to think, without being hair-pullingly frustrating. The lack of early game PAP makes early game much more meaningfully challenging too.

2: Things are laid out so well to players. Naturally being able to naturally figure out most hoops of MOTD with just a few public matches is a feat that plenty of Blundell’s other maps failed at achieving.

3: The map wisely limits what’s available, so that people are always kept on their toes. PHD and Mule Kick being on the map would’ve, in my opinion, detracted from it by making things too easy for players, and taking away the constant threat in mid game.

3: Brutus tops George Romero’s aura with how crazy he makes controllers vibrate, and the sounds of him moving around.

4: No map has executed wall weapon locations quite like MOTD has. I love the best wall weapon being in the worst place, and the worse two wall weapons being more accessible (MP5/BR being the first you can reach, Uzi getting multiple spawns)

5: MOTD fixed buildables in BO2, and set the standard for Origins/BO3.

That said though, there are things I would like to seen changed about it.

1: I agree about the flat perk choices. Stamin-Up and (not yet released) Vulture-Aid would’ve been good, viable options to fight for perk slot 4. Being the first BO2 map to have Deadshot means Treyarch missed a good opportunity to rework the perk into something useful.

2: I agree about the need for more transportation options. Some quick-travel to the roof that’s far from gondola would’ve been huge for making getting around so much less bad.

3: There just aren’t enough high rounds spots, even if I actually like the Cafeteria strategy. I love the other traps, but the dock sniper just isn’t useful. If it did unlimited damage, and targeted zombies outside the map first, it could’ve been a great supportive trap by taking some pressure off the player… along with some minor layout changes to the docks, so its harder for their spawns to fuck you. I’ll say the same for the the fan room; there’s too many damn zombie spawns so close by in this already tight room.

4: I like the side quests, but they aren’t explained well enough to players. In my opinion, it should ideally be that every hoop can be learned by the average player with enough time, and I just don’t think that’s the case for the Golden Spork or Redeemer. MOTD could’ve benefited hugely from the (later introduced in Origins) challenge system.

5: Brutus, for how good of a threatening aura, and for how powerful his anti-utility is… you seriously have to fuck up to die to him. I would make him move faster than the players walk speed, give his early round versions more health, and maybe even give him some kind of ranged attack (taser?) that’s easy to avoid, and highly telegraphed.

I’m nitpicking the hell out of this map, because I seriously have to look for problems with it. This is the closest a zombies map has gotten to being a 10/10 for me. I always have fun when I run this map, and it truly brings something for everyone. It hurts my soul so much how badly Blood of the Dead was fucked up, especially with how applicable some of BO3’s innovations/features are.

Honestly my only gripe is how most of your progression is done before round 10 and once the acid gat stops killing there really isn’t anything fun to do on the map anymore. It’s part of the reason der eisendrache is so much better, you can do stuff into the 20s or 30s if you really want something to do, and the weapons actually kill stuff.

    Mob gets a 7.5/10
