We know it was caused by one of Richtofen’s rockets, that it’s a gateway to Agartha.. and that’s about it.
I’m semi-glad it’s never explained in the Kronorium, mostly because that ruined the fun of theorising on the story. I’m still curious.

I think “The rift” is the large portion of the Aether that was cut off from Richtofen after Maxis had launched the rockets. I’m thinking of The Rift as a big hole in the Aether, separating the user and the rest of the Aether itself. When Victis repairs The Rift in Maxis’s favor, he gains total control over the Aether, because the Rift has been fixed
