On a scale of 1-10, how would you rate Call of the Dead? I’ll start:

I haven’t played it all that much but personally wasn’t that big a fan. Didn’t enjoy the ice effects; wonder weapons were lack luster but unique which I respect. I’d give it a 7. Heresy I know

I’d rank it at an 8.5 not a 9. For me a 9 is a map that’s near perfect in every way, but factors like personal taste drag it down a little. And while I think CotD is great, it’s easily my favorite BO1 map, it is held back by a few key factors.

First the fog. I don’t know if there’s a legitimate technical reason for the fog existing on this map, I don’t think there is since it goes away at times, but I can’t help but hate it on later rounds. CotD is such a beautiful map with so many little things on it that make it look great, but then the fog rolls in and suddenly I’m reminded this is an early-ish Xbox 360/PS3 era game and a lot of the BO1 polish is just smoke and mirrors.

Second late round George. Listen I love George on early rounds, he’s a fun and interesting obstacle that takes skill and patience to overcome, but on later rounds? He’s just in the way and requires a player to either grab a specific WW just to get rid of him whenever he shows up or to deal with him as a constant source of annoyance and stress on the map. Sure you get free perks if you kill him, which is a great feature, but once you’ve got all the perks on the map it doesn’t matter anymore and he should definitely stop showing up. Honestly I think The Smith Plays said it well when he said that George should stay gone after the first time he’s defeated with players being given the option to resummon him at will for extra rewards.

And third there’s really not much reason for a lot of the small choices on this map like a roaming pack a punch that I believe literally only ever spawns in freezing cold water that will lock you in place if you stay in it too long, the Jugg location, the fact that the Wonder Waffe is on the map but you can’t permanently keep it as a WW, and the VR-11 basically being a glorified stop gap solution to the George issue and little more, I mean they could have at least made the human transformation thing more useful for attracting zombies or something.

So yeah it’s great, but not quite that near perfect I need for a 9 or up.

To copy-paste my comment on yesterdays deleted version of this post, I’ll give it an 8.5, which is high A-tier for me. I agree with most of your notes.

I love the (new as of ascension) mobility-based threats that constantly pressures people away from comfy spots. While the Ascension monkeys fail to get people moving throughout actual rounds, this map succeeds in a way that rarely is frustrating or impossible to deal with.Transportation being so good helps the quality of life in solo so much, and makes playing with teammates who die frequently far more bearable. The systems also save far more time than the teleporters on Der-Riese, and especially the painfully slow Lander’s.

I wish Treyarch would’ve found better ways to make Romero a meaningful, menacing boss, without making him a complete bullet sponge. Yes, he has a threatening aura, but it is difficult to die to him enraged, compared to something like the Origins Panzer.

And lastly, I don’t think the layout comes that close to perfection. There’s only really one path to take from spawn, and areas of the map like Stamin-Up and Speed Cola feel barren. If all of the outskirt areas had some form of transportation between one another, it’d be much less of an issue. I don’t think that takes away too much from the map, but I don’t love it.

I love hard maps, and Call of the Dead does everything Five does with the early/mid-round difficulty, while also offering a more navigable, flexible layout. Five is my favorite map on BO1 because of how chaotic everything gets, but I think Call of the Dead is still the best map on this game.

I’d probably give it a very very close 8/10
