My great uncle was a pilot in the Army Air Force during World War II flying mostly B-17s. He flew 65 battle missions, most of which were in the China-Burma-India theatre of operation. On one mission, his plane sustained heavy damage and his whole crew had to bail out over Burma. All crew members survived but never saw each other again. There’s a picture of him with this patch on his jacket above his heart. My family is so curious as to if there’s a significance to a patch like this… anyone have any clues or history about this particular symbolism in US WWII service men?
