This game has a patented algorithm that determines almost all values, sometimes glitches happen and he was supposed to just have more health but apparently he ended up with plates by accident. It was simply his turn to win bruh.

Taking fall damage doesn’t break your plates. So if he was down because he fell, then selfed, he would have full armour.
did you down him? When you get downed by fall damage it doesn’t damage your plates, just your health so when you res you have plates still
Replay might not be too accurate. They paused for a pretty long time after throwing the smoke. Might have actually been putting on shields and it just didn’t show up.
