Broomall Newtown arrived at the Babe Ruth 14U World Series in Eagle Pass, Texas, with a simple objective: hit the ball with authority, pitch well and keep stacking wins.
So far, so good.
Broomall Newtown beat Panama, 14-1, Monday at the Patsy Winn Sports Complex to improve to 3-0 in pool play. The team’s next test comes Tuesday against Mexico at 5:30 p.m.
The offense has been productive. Broomall Newtown has outscored the opposition, 37-11, after three contests.
Broomall Newtown held a 3-0 lead entering the top of the fourth Monday. Those runs were courtesy of some Panama help, with a bases-loaded walk and two balks. Then the bats got going for BN.
Cole Patterson and Ryan Raftovich each smashed two-run doubles in the fourth to extend the lead to 7-0. Nate DeBellis followed with an RBI single to make it 8-0.
BN put the game completely out of reach with a six-run sixth inning. Patterson opened the frame with a double and scored on Matthew Schumacher’s triple. James Hogan and Patrick Jordan followed with RBI doubles, David Jackson added a run-scoring single and Wyatt Rickards capped the inning with a two-run base knock.
Rickards finished 3-for-4, while Patterson went 2-for-3 with a walk, two RBIs and three runs scored. Schumacher and DeBellis each collected two hits. BN finished with 14 hits.
Jack McCusker was efficient on the bump, tossing five innings and striking out seven without issuing a free pass. He gave up a run on four hits. Hogan finished the game with a scoreless inning of relief.
The tournament started Saturday with Broomall Newtown surviving a wild one against Aruba, 21-10. Ryan Siddons had two singles, two walks, three RBIs and scored twice. Patterson and Hogan each collected two hits, while Schumacher ripped a triple and drove in four runs.
Sunday was considerably quieter thanks in large part to the pitching excellence of Danny Quinn, who delivered a three-hit shutout in a 2-0 victory over Stamford (Conn.). He struck out four.
The only runs came in the bottom of the fifth, and Quinn helped get the rally started when he singled with one out. Jackson followed with a single and Rickards walked to load the bases.
Siddons stroked a single to left field to bring home the game’s first run. With two outs, Schumacher beat out an infield single to score Jackson and make it 2-0.
Quinn made sure the lead would hold up. After allowing a leadoff single in the seventh, he retired the next three hitters in order to finish off the shutout.
Mexico was 1-1 in pool play prior to its game with Stamford Monday night, gets the next crack at them. The tournament runs until Saturday.
Broomall Newtown is competing in the Babe Ruth World Series for the eighth time. Its 13U and 15U programs each won the championship in 2014.
