Production on Prime Video’s television adaptation of the God of War video game series has faced significant cast changes. Filming in Vancouver was previously suspended due to an injury to actor Ryan Hurst, who suffered a severe biceps tear during a stunt. Due to the lengthy recovery period, Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios have decided to replace the actor playing Kratos and reshoot four completed episodes. Filming is scheduled to resume in October, pushing the project’s expected premiere back to 2027 or 2028.
In addition to the forced replacement of the main character, planned creative decisions will affect the characters of Atreus and Thrud in the show’s second season. In the first season, the younger versions of these characters will be played by Callum Vinson and Ireland Austin. However, casting lists for the second season confirm a search for actors between the ages of 14 and 17 to play the older characters. The developers do not plan to stretch the adaptation of one game over several seasons and intend to move directly to the events of the game. God of War Ragnarök, which requires the gradual maturation of the heroes in the second part of the project.
Currently, casting for the second installment includes descriptions of the adult Atreus as a curious and compassionate young man with archery skills, and Thrúd as a confident and sarcastic young woman with combat training. The main cast also includes Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Ed Skrein as Balder, and Alastair Duncan, returning as Mímir. Amid extensive reshoots and the search for a new actor to play Kratos, the production team is preparing for a lengthy production cycle.
