Devin Heroux spoke to Athletics Canada head coach Glenroy Gilbert after Canada appealed to get their 4×100-metres relay silver medal reinstated.
There is never a dull moment when it comes to the men’s 4×100-metre relay final and Saturday was no exception.
In short, Canada raced to a silver medal, then was disqualified after a lane violation that happened on the handoff between lead runner Aaron Brown and Jerome Blake. Eventually, Canada ’s medal was reinstated after team officials successfully won an appeal. Then, another appeal was launched, which was agonizingly slow to resolve for all involved before an official decision was rendered and the Canadian men were able to keep their silver medal.
For his part, Athletics Canada coach Glen Gilbert was confident his team would win the appeal following an extraordinary turn of events.
“It was our video that overturned this,” Gilbert told CBC Sports reporter Devin Heroux. “The video that they have [organizers] was inconclusive. You couldn’t really tell because it was very blurry. But one of our helpers here also had a video of [the shot] straight on of Aaron and Jerome and the exchange, and it showed Aaron’s foot…there was a sliver [where] you can see the blue of the track between his spike and the white line.”
