For a long while now, Standard has been in a bit of a weird spot. At the top, ultra-fast Prowess decks have long ruled the roost, thanks to constant inaction from Wizards. While this has aggravated some players, the metagame has still developed, as slower control shells have steadily been gaining popularity.
Within decks like Four Color Control and Jeskai Lessons, Jeskai Revelation is a common occurrence. As these decks have gotten more popular, demand has naturally increased, turning Jeskai Revelation into a rather expensive MTG card.
MTG Jeskai Revelation
Despite being expensive, Jeskai Revelation does everything that a control deck could want in MTG. Providing a counterspell, removal, bodies, card draw, and life gain all at once, this spell really does it all. While none of these effects are that impressive individually, all together they present a huge tempo advantage that’s incredibly difficult to recover from.
Essentially, if a control deck gets to cast Jeskai Revelation, stabilizing, let alone winning, becomes basically impossible. This is especially true against Prowess and Landfall decks, as the combined bounce and removal effects set them back massively. While these decks can go under control sometimes, these archetypes are surprisingly well balanced against one another.
Thanks to this, Jeskai Lessons and Four Color Control decks have firmly solidified themselves as tier one Standard decks. This has naturally increased demand for the staples within these decks; however, Jeskai Revelation notably doesn’t see much play elsewhere. In Commander, for instance, this card only appears in around 6,500 decks, as it’s too slow and inefficient in the format.
Technically, Jeskai Revelation does see fringe play in Pioneer; however, it’s hardly a staple in that format. Despite this lack of multiformat appeal, however, Standard players have still been pushing this card’s price up.
A Steady Spike
As the Standard metagame has evolved, Jeskai Revelation has gradually climbed in price. For the longest time, this card used to be incredibly inexpensive, as control decks used to be basically unviable. Back in January, for instance, you could have picked up a copy for just $0.50, but that price point is now long gone.
Once Control started to prove itself again, Jeskai Revelation jumped in price, pushing it up to around $1.29 in April. After this, the card has only been getting more and more expensive, with near-mint copies now selling for $5.09. This marks a 294% price spike in around three months; however, the market price is even higher.
With higher TCGplayer Direct sales pushing the market price to $7.12, it seems that Jeskai Revelation still has room to grow. Sadly, if you’re still looking to pick up a copy of this card, there are very few cheaper copies available. Between the default frame and the borderless variant, you’ll only save around 50 cents by picking up a lightly played example instead.
One to Watch
For better or worse, it’s unclear where the price of Jeskai Revelation will end up long term. In the short term, things do look decent, especially since The Hobbit doesn’t look meta-warping totally so far. That being said, in February of next year, Standard will rotate, pushing out six MTG sets from the format.
Given this rotation will push so many staples, from Wilds of Eldraine to Duskmourn, out of the format, it’ll undoubtedly trigger a huge metagame shift. After this, all bets are off, as control could easily fall off or become the new dominant menace. Hopefully, the format should maintain its balance, but even that doesn’t remove the clock from Jeskai Revelation.
While it is a ways away, Jeskai Revelation will rotate out of Standard in February of 2028. Considering this card doesn’t see strong play anywhere else, this inevitable rotation could cause its price to crash. Realistically, however, we’ve still got a long way to go until then, and it could theoretically find a home elsewhere in the meantime.
Ultimately, as always, we’ll just have to wait and see what happens with Jeskai Revelation and Standard’s control decks. Given that three Standard sets are still releasing this year, and rotation isn’t ages away, anything is possible really. Due to the card’s potential in control decks, however, Jeskai Revelation may well be worth keeping an eye on.
