Hops end seven-game losing streak with 7-3 win at Tri-City

Ding dong the witch is dead.

The Hillsboro Hops ended their seven-game losing streak with a 7-3 win over Tri-City in the first of their six-game series on Tuesday, July 7, in Pasco, Washington.

Yassel Soler hit two home runs, JD Dix had three RBI, and Rocco Reid locked things down on the mound in relief to lead the Hops to their first win in their last eight tries.

Hillsboro got the scoring started in the second inning when Soler hit the first of his two home runs, then added two runs in the third inning, two more in the sixth, and two final runs in the seventh.

The Dust Devils got two runs — one earned — off of Hops starting pitcher Rio Britton over the first 5.1 innings, but were stymied by Reid who relieved Britton and threw 2.2 hitless innings, striking out four and walking one.

Tri-City did get a run off of Alexis Liebano who pitched the ninth and struck out three, walked one, and allowed an RBI-double to Johan Macias.

Offensively, Jose Mejia had three hits and two runs scored, while Dix and Soler had two hits apiece.

Tri-City starting pitcher Jose Atencio lasted 5.1 innings, taking the loss, and allowed three earned runs while striking out three

At the plate, the Dust Devils were led by Capri Ortiz who went 2-for-5 with a run scored.

With the win, Hillsboro improved to 7-9 in the season’s second half and sits in fourth place in the second half standings, five games behind Spokane who has won 10 straight games.

The Hops and Dust Devils will play again at 7:05 p.m. tonight, at Gesa Stadium in Pasco.
