Big news ahead of today’s game with Alphonso Davies — Canada’s captain and superstar player — available to play against Qatar, head coach Jesse Marsch confirmed yesterday.

Davies missed the opening match against Bosnia and Herzegovina as he was recovering from a hamstring injury suffered during the second leg of Bayern Munich’s Champions League semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain. Marsch said at his news conference:

💬 “He’s been in training this week and he‘ll be available. Alphonso is looking really good, so it’s just a matter of, ‘OK, what kind of game is it? What kind of moment is it? And how do we feel he can contribute?”

During training in Vancouver, Davies was in return to play protocol. As our Joshua Kloke reported on Monday, Davies began training with the rest of the group, something he hasn’t always done. Marsch made it sound like it will be situational in terms of where Davies can best contribute.

Davies has 15 goals in 58 caps for Canada. He scored Canada’s first ever goal at the World Cup in 2022 and should he contribute today, it would be a big boost for Canada given his ability to play different positions including left-back, winger or wing-back.
