Now In Game Channel posted a video today (via GameXplain) that gives us new looks at the prototypes of Super Mario 64 and Kirby Bowl 64. The games were on display at Spaceworld / Shoshinkai ’95.
CharlyCNintendo pointed out a number of differences for Super Mario 64 compared to the final version. The game originally had bigger hitboxes for chests, two types of fish that could spawn in Whomp’s Fortress, and changes with the cannon. Some environments were modified for the final version as well.
As for Kirby Bowl 64, the game was notable as it was actually cancelled. Based on footage, we know that there were plans for gameplay reminiscent of Kirby’s Dream Course and another mode similar to Kirby Air Ride.
Before Kirby Air Ride released on GameCube, Kirby’s Air Ride was planned for the N64. However, like Kirby Bowl 64, it was cancelled. Eventually, these two cancelled projects led to Kirby Air Ride on the GameCube.
You can find the prototype footage for Super Mario 64 and Kirby Bowl 64 here. Technically there’s a bit for Mario Kart as well, but very little of that one was shown.
It’s always very interesting when we get a look at Nintendo games early on. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is one game that changed significantly before release. Originally, it was set to use portals like Super Mario 64. If you’re wondering what that was like, head on over here.
