Assassin’s Creed is embracing multiplayer once again but early thoughts on the new game aren’t looking good.
The Assassin’s Creed series has always predominantly been a single-player experience, taking one or sometimes two protagonists from a compelling setting and launching them into a world of parkour and stealth-based combat.
While multiplayer modes have been featured like the one you had in Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag it was Assassin’s Creed Unity that came the closest to being a full-on co-op experience, and quite a good one at that.
However Ubisoft is going further than it’s ever gone before with one of its next titles, provided it’s not cancelled first.
Multiplayer Assassin’s Creed Game Could Be Scrapped After Latest Playtests
Assassin’s Creed Invictus is an in-development multiplayer game we’ve talked about before but it’s since received an interesting update.
As reported by Insider Gaming some playtests were done last month and the details of said tests have leaked online. It doesn’t sound great.
The claims come from xj0nathan on X who was reportedly told by one of the playtesters the game is “awful.”
Assassin’s Creed Invictus is said to borrow elements from the hit multiplayer game Fall Guys but still retain its identity as an Assassin’s Creed game. That means no bean-like or chibi-style characters but still a competitive gaming experience that’d see players put their parkour and assassination skills to the test.
Epic Games
Insider Gaming claims to have seen gameplay and reported that several settings seen in the Assassin’s Creed series, like Greece from Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, are used as maps, with players getting to choose from their favourite assassins as playable characters.
It sounds fine on paper but clearly those who’ve gotten to play it aren’t so keen.
Assassin’s Creed Invictus is supposedly meant to release by the end of this year but these early impressions could apparently push the game’s release date back or cancel it entirely.
Whether it actually gets to see the light of day remains to be seen.
All Upcoming Assassin’s Creed Games/Projects
Ubisoft currently has several titles in the pipeline for the Assassin’s Creed series with the latest being Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, coming in July. Interestingly the multiplayer mode found in the original has been cut from the remake, but with what we’ve heard about Invictus so far perhaps Ubisoft would have been better leaving it in.
The next mainline title will be Assassin’s Creed Hexe which hasn’t been heard from for quite some time. Whether Ubisoft’s recent shake-up has had any impact on that is unknown. A spin-off called Assassin’s Creed Jade is also still on the way.
With Assassin’s Creed Invictus the only other project we know is definitely on the way is the live-action Netflix series, which will tell an original tale set in Ancient Rome.
