One must imagine a little Valerie or Vincent sitting in class scowling over the disgusting rockerboy, rolling their eyes over whatever fluff pieces Kerry pushed out to soften his image. Scoffing at the Samurai posters plastered to the walls all over the city, the gonks wearing faded or handmade Samurai shirts decades after the band dissolved. Girl V mortified that Silverhand is in her head calling her a JoyToy, thinking about whatever stories she’d been told about him. Boy V being mortified that Silverhand is in his head and called a JoyToy because he’s still being objectified by this asshole. That first night is hell, only for the next day Johnny calling a truce and vowing to help. V is everything he hated as an adult. To him, V is a spoiled brat.
All this only for V being willing to let Johnny borrow their body every now and then. V has to see Johnny relive the love and loss of Alt only for the dude to bitch when (fem)V gets with River. Johnny can’t even stand to be close by when she eats dinner with River’s family. She tells them that she wanted a family once. She’s only 27. There’s a chance that V probably believed she’d settle down at 30 and start her family then. She’s falling in love on borrowed time with this 40 year old ex-cop, but Johnny knows that v is stuck with him. The closest thing to a boys night out Johnny and (male) v will ever have is when Johnny takes the body to the strip club. Johnny has to watch V fall in love with Panam, who isn’t too different from Rogue, and see what it’s like to treat a woman well and how simple it can be, knowing that V is stuck with him anyway. V never would’ve imagined loving someone like Panam but by the time he has her, it’s too late.
In the same way that Johnny wonders if things would’ve been better had he been with Kerry, he’d probably do the same to keep V if they had their own bodies. Johnny is in Rogue’s past, Alt is code, and I just don’t think he’d actually commit to Kerry. But (any gender) V? Johnny would fight tooth and nail to keep them close. Johnny is a selfish, greedy man. After all of that, I do not think he’d let his V go. That’s his best friend. Just about everyone loves V and thanks to V, Johnny becomes a bit of a better person. V can live without Johnny, but Johnny can’t live without V because she is real and he is not. He will always haunt V.
If V gives Johnny the body, he still doesn’t get what he wants. He’s just in the body of the person he cared for and wanted to save. He can try and give V a family and a life they deserved, but he’s doing so without V. It’d be easier for him if it were Vincent, but I don’t think Johnny would do anything but be a rockstar in Valerie’s body.
