The future of the Mortal Kombat series is still up in the air for a few different reasons, but the most recent game is continuing to sell well it seems.
Warner Bros. and NetherRealm Studios announced today that Mortal Kombat 1 has reached a new sales milestone, continuing to put it ahead of the other major fighting games this generation.
Mortal Kombat 1 has now sold over 8 million copies since launching in September 2023, so it hit that high mark in around two and a half years.
Previously, Ed Boon revealed their latest Mortal Kombat hit 6.2 million copies last August and 5 million copies towards the start of 2025.
So that means the game pushed an additional 1.8 million units in a little less than eight months.
This is a bit interesting to see since Warner Bros. made the decision to cease DLC support for Mortal Kombat 1 a year ago when it appeared as though they planned to originally support the game for much longer.
One thing that likely helped push these numbers higher is the consistency at which Mortal Kombat 1 has been on sale including its Definitive Edition containing all of its content.
Said 8 million puts it firmly ahead of its competition still this generation with Street Fighter 6 being the closest rival at 6.36 million at the start of this year.
That being said, however, MK1 has still yet to reach the heights of its predecessor since Mortal Kombat 11 hit 15 million copies, which presumably made it the best-selling entry in the franchise.
As for where things go from here, NetherRealm is already working on their next project strongly rumored to be Injustice 3 though nothing has been confirmed yet.
This also comes as NetherRealm and Mortal Kombat may find a new home with Paramount trying to acquire Warner Bros. after Netflix backed out of the deal.
So we’ll have to wait and see what the future holds for Mortal Kombat, but the series certainly won’t be going away with the way it continues to sell.
