Houston’s “Mattress Mack” is a trendsetter. Furniture stores nationwide are now starting to copy Mack’s patented high-stakes gambling furniture promotion strategy.
Jordan’s Furniture, a chain with stores in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island, recently made its own “Mattress Mack” type promotion based on the fate of local sports teams.
The furniture chain bet big on both University of Connecticut basketball teams to make their respective NCAA Championship games. If both UConn teams advanced to their respective national championship games, Jordan’s Furniture promised to reimburse its customers around $50 million.
But only one UConn team advanced to its respective championship game. The UConn women’s team lost Friday in their Final Four matchup with South Carolina, a game that included some coach-centric controversy.
